Appearances and reality are completely different for a fact and this is exemplified in the paper through the woman character and the friend Xia. The scenarios unfold in the life of the main character in “a Woman Like Me” who allowed her past perception blinds her from reality. The paper explores these instances while centering at the theme of appearance and reality. One can argue that the fact that appearance and reality lacks a clear match is not shocking at all since evolution ruthlessly eradicated the unfit.
The theme of reality and appearance revolves thought the book offering an exciting account of the lives of the lie that manifest in our societies particularly in relationships (Bradley, 53). The main character is in a relationship with a man named Xia who thinks knows her but hardly does. She is in conflict with herself claiming that nothing worries her more than sharing the reality of her life she hides. In other words, she is contemplating whether to disclose to her boyfriend Xia, about her real profession, a job associated with formaldehyde and corpse. “…. I had the appearance of a happy person, but my heart was filled with a hidden sorrow”( Xi, 67).
Through critical analysis, the events surrounding the life of the main character offers a more understanding into the misconception of reality. Critically, if one continually misperceive or similarly hallucinate and proceed to those misapprehensions, there are chances of not surviving long in a world filled with queries whose avoidance needs accurate distance. The story has revealed that in our modern day, our conscious appearance of the world many times though being relatively stable, is never static.
This is to say we fail to be fully objective, even in our highest mundane impressions and observations. This is built on the fact that despite the main character appearance of her situation and life was based on her opinion of fate rather than the reality she failed many times to get the idea out of her head that her fate with men was never lasting. She saw herself as a disadvantaged by her job such that no man would accept her after opening up to them concerning her profession. This in reality was not the reality but her appearance.
She says that her past honesty only made her loos all her friends. it is true that per past has been a sad one losing friends. Friends to any individual can be compared to what water is to fish. Friends are vital in our lives for they are the ones who encourage us and give us support (Witt and Proffitt, 250). One can argue that the main character was right in her appearance of the future and her fear for not disclosing to her friend her profession. However, one can largely fault her since the past appearance would not necessarily mean the reality of the future.
It is true losing friends is like partly losing the meaning of life but that was a past appearance but not the reality. As a conclusion, appearance and reality are too confusing aspects that are rarely separated. Such has been the case in the story "A Woman Like Me" were the main goes through ideological perceptions of her past relationships. This made her leave in denial of her profession even to the one she claimed to love. This in a way made the friend to have a wrong perception of her rather than the reality.
