The poem which begins with optimistic promises ends up creating doubt by listing reasons why shepherd’s promises are false. Every stanza of the poem dismisses a promise made in the corresponding stanza and at the end, the final stanza seem to absolutely crash the shepherd’s dream. Marlowe’s poem ends in an optimistic or rather regrettable manner by stating that if some realities of life could have been removed, they could perhaps live together.

Donne reveals the experience of unclothing his mistress in steps as well as enjoyment and longing for her increasing until he reaches an ecstasy of admiration. Donne further urges her on with a series of imperatives and when she is completely naked, he asks to teach her what she must do for him to taste whole joy. Closer reading of the poem reveals tantalizing complexities and amid state of heightened desire, the speaker shows his ability for wit by explaining his anticipated sex with being a soldier waiting for battle.

The speaker experiences joy from discovering her mistress’ body by describing her body as “a new-found land.” This poem is just like many other poems that take beauty, love, eroticism and many spiritual issues as their subjects although here, it is about living life fully on earth without regrets. The poet encourages virgins to get married when they are still attractive and can bear children inorder to participate in an important life ceremony-marriage. The speaker feels that time is quickly passing and therefore virgins should act fast using images such as flowers dying to drive the point home.
