Most sticking literary elements actively change the perception of the audience to the poem and effectively play a big role in the audience overriding other elements.
Literary Elements
There is the use of suspense in the poem that leaves more questions in the audience than answers. William does not express in his poem if he expressed his love to Lucy and leaves this part ambivalent. There is no expression of whether Lucy ever knew of the Poets affection in her life. William uses Metaphors in the poem to relay his message of how Lucy is lovely. The metaphors emphasize the beauty of Lucy and demand attention in reading the poem. The poet also uses symbolism in the poem to emphasize Lucy Beauty. The symbols used are stars and the planet Venus associated with beauty.
Impact of the Literary Elements
The use of suspense leaves more questions in the audience than answers. The poet William is a very romantic man and expresses his love for Lucy beautifully. The suspense that he created by not disclosing his love to Lucy attracted my inner thought to critically think. What might be the reasons for the disclosure? Why suffer from emotions that are considered beautiful by many people.
Metaphors in the poem are used to efficiently represent the poet’s view of Lucy. They also help emphasize symbolism used in the poem. The use of these metaphors changes the audience's view to see the simplicity and emotional intensity in the poem. The use of the metaphor in the third line of the second stanza raises questions. Lucy's beauty is compared to Venus and the star (Wordsworth, 2008). Which of these two most resemble Lucy? The metaphors attract my interest and desire to know more about the love poem.
The use of symbols in the poem slightly shifted my attention to William Wordsworth the poet. The symbols used to emphasize the beauty reveal that William is a nature lover. The use of stars, planets, and flowers, clearly indicates the love of nature. The symbols helped me to understand the message in the poem of love. The poet must have felt intense emotions using the symbols.
Conclusion
The symbolism, metaphor, and suspense greatly influenced my comprehension of the poem. Symbolism and suspense were most dominant in all the styles that William used as they initiated more questions than answers. The symbolism attracted my attention most and revealed the character of the poet as a nature lover that was in the poem. These two elements played a big role in my understanding and influenced me to overlook other elements in the poem as simple language and the simplicity of the poem.
