Condorcet claims that gender prejudice brings about ‘an inequality that is fatal even to the party in whose favor it works.’ - Evidence that supports this view. French revolutionist Antoine Nicholas de Condorcet advocated that reason played a phenomenal role in achieving perfection in the human race. As a well versed reformer among his social circles, pioneering in his pursuit for the eradication of inequality, he discovered certain blatant flaws in the system that held partial rights. His works triumphed over the cause of feminism and echoed the fatal end of those that supported inequality. His argument had a political, religious and reformative voice as he tried to expose the flaws of a corrupted system that was wrong and biased. His works evinced an interest in the political, social and religious future of his society. Let us dig deeper into the causes of such tyranny of injustice that destroys the future of the any part of the society that supports it. He was absolutely optimistic about the future of the human race as he envisioned a society devoid of racism and a total destruction of prejudiced sects that are a main cause for inequality and division. He revoked such a broken state as a complete violation of pure inner strength and objected that every attempt to cover such brutal prevention of rights is vain and contemptuous. Interestingly, the journey that Condorcet depicts is that of a hopeful path from painful abuse and oppression to a hallway of enlightenment and equality. His works showcased a Utopian world that was free from tyranny and brought about ideas that were futuristic and promising for the aged with excellent education, decent work hours and a sophisticated lifestyle that was beyond their era. Had Condorcet been alive today, he would have certainly been hailed as the guru of the Information Era by digital experts. His educational goals have a far reaching effect and witnessed sound judgment that is more attractive to today’s age. His ideology of fewer working hours with a smart pay sums up his thinking as being exceptional and unique for his day and age. He highlights three main inequalities such as those common to man – inequality in wealth, inequality in status and inequality in education. Inequality in wealth – This kind of inequality sets a stage for absolute tyranny with the rich growing richer and the poor growing poorer. In such a society, there is no dearth of corruption as there is no set standard to earn wealth and live a life devoid of deceit and prejudice. It gives rise to ample reason for anarchy as the poorer sections of society are left uncared and forlorn in a constant bid by the government to hail the rich and hoard wealth at their expense. It is the rich that occupy prominent positions of power while the poor are trampled and looked down upon. A very stark contrast of inequality is seen in the lives of those that are completely dependent on their daily wages for a living and those that rely on money from their family assets such as land revenue or other means of capital. Inequality in status – A tremendous surge of dissatisfaction stems from those that sustain until their work life allows them to as opposed to those who are born with a status identity based on their lineage. It is a struggle for existence and it is this inequality that made Condorcet repulse the traditional ideology. It is incumbent that such inequality diminishes to pave way for a healthy living by placing the women on the same pedestal as that of the men. Women must be given equal rights as men as they possess the same inner potential and qualities in developing and building a nation from its roots. Inequality in education – For a great part of the 18th century, women were denied the rights of education and this bias crept in stealthily that made life much hollow and miserable. Freedom of education is a basic right and to this cause Condorcet made every effort to transform things for women in an extremely biased society. A woman’s independence and free-spirited will was erased as a mere theory and was never given a shape and form as it rightly deserved. Severe manipulation and twisted thinkers have marred every possible means to restore a woman’s dignity in the realm of education. To this end, Condorcet strived hard to emphasize on a society that produces individuals capable of showing a remarkable development – socially, morally and intellectually. He placed extreme importance on Universal Education that helped population understand logic and science in popularizing the nuclear family system. All these reasons of inequality are not independent of one another as they act in perfect unity, supporting one another and forming an alliance. These combined reasons make a stronger force in bringing about equality or inequality based on their subsequent effects. Equality in education brings about a greater equality in business opportunities, overall wealth and this in turn leads to a successful educational system within the nation and among all such mutually dependent nations. Equality is a duty of every person in the society to promise a life full of abundance and not just mere existence. To make those around us understand that it all begins in the family we come from and the society we live in. It is a limitless horizon that a perfect day will arrive to cast out all such fears of prejudice and fear – the fear of being treated as the second best. It is then that a positive outlook welcomes a society free from all vices, superstitions and degrading moral code. It is a clarion call for a life full of liberty from vicious effects of inequality in spheres such as wealth, status, gender and education. Condorcet was a visionary in every sense of the word and he envisioned a world full of equality especially for a woman, a world free from disorder, a world as a beacon of hope, success and life in its complete sense of prosperity.
