The legacy of empire: Tayeb Salih The single moment in the novel, which illustrates the divided impact or contradictory impact on throne on the Mustafa Saeed is when he succeeded in colonial discourse that attempted in domesticating the colonized subjects and abolishing the radical otherness. The colonial discourse brought them inside the western understanding (Salih, 53). Another illustration in the novel outlines that the people who sought English have the disposition to transform culturally.
From the book, Mustafa father told him that the English will direct their affairs from far since they left behind the people whom they thought as they do. The impact here is that education for Mustafa was not a random action, but a strategy for the colonialists to favor their interests. The issuing of travels was a means to an end. To Mustafa, the journey itself was less important that the destination. Travelling was a defining factor for Mustafa. The initial travels were not movements from home but it was considered a step closer.
According to the conceptual travel of James Clifford, the journey of Mustafa to England was not a complement but a homecoming story and eventually the dwelling aspect. According to Clifford, travel was a complex experience range of interaction and crossing that concerned the localism of various conventional assumptions on culture. Dwelling was considered to be the collective, and travel supplements’ local ground (Salih, 3).The story of Mustafa juxtaposes the conventional story about the Mustafa’s England journey can be seen how the roots succeeds routes.
