The play focuses on daily rituals of a small family in Brooklyn. The narrator Alfieri, a young lawyer speaks of bloody course, which the contemporary society has to fight. Alfieri believes that bloody curse has incestuous longings and brutal consequences; however, the author uses him to illustrate the idea that the society can rise beyond the superstitious arguments that have promoted tyranny and bondage. Eddie’s remark to Beatrice his wife and Catherine his cousin about the successful arrival of Catherine’s sisters in America illegally demonstrates the extent to which human pursuit for better life transcends ethical practice.
Arguably, Eddie is aware about the consequences of illegal immigration. However, he takes a supportive stand in supporting the illegal immigration of Beatrice’s two cousins. The play takes a nosedive turn when Eddie suddenly changes in his mind after discovering a relationship between Rodolfo and Catherine. Initially, Eddie had rejected the honor of exposing the scandal thereby demonstrating humanitarian ground to seek refuge for the poor women. In essence, the author settles that indemnity in doing good surpasses what the society would called justice (Mclntosh and Warren 192).
It is apparent that Eddie cannot overcome the growing bitterness in his heart that he developed following the realization that Catherine was dating Rodolfo. The author points of the consequences of myopic traits as illustrated by the actions of Eddie in the play. The Alfieri’s warning to Eddie over the legal consequences of exposing the illegal immigrants illustrates the author’s view of what it takes to live in America. The illegal immigrants accept the challenge of living in the country without securing the legal documents.
