Because of this, Iago begins to plan ways on how he can bring both Casio and Othello to their downfall. For Casio, he wants to see him demoted and Othello lose his glory. From the play, Iago emerges as the antagonist and as the individual to blame for the events that take place in the story. He is selfish and does not recognize and appreciate Casio’s capability in passing him for the post of lieutenant. Instead, he schemes a plan that will see him demoted. He is also insecure and lacks trust for his friends and even his wife.

Suspicion and allegations inform most of his actions, which prove lethal for other characters in the play. In his scheme to have Casio demoted and Othello beaten, Iago seeks the help of Rodrigo. He lies to Rodrigo that he will help him in seducing Desdemona, Othello’s wife if he helps him carry out his plans. In doing this, Iago comes up with a plan that will make Othello and Casio to get out of his way. Using treason, he moves Desdemona’s handkerchief into Casio’s possession and lies to Othello that she must have given it to Casio.

With this, he convinces Othello to be a strong indication that they are having an affair. Which he then goes to confront Casio over the issue, and makes the argument sound as if the woman in question is Desdemona, manipulating Othello to believe him so. The woman the two are talking about, however, is Bianca, Casio’s mistress (Meyer: 318). Othello, in rage and anger, orders Iago to kill Casio over the allegations. Othello’s actions are very well informed according to the information given to him by Iago.

They, therefore, are not beyond the context, and he cannot be said to have been overreacted. Rather it is Iago to blame for the false information he gave on such importantand fundamental aspects as it is infidelity.
