Extract of sample "Cinderella as Prototype"

Yeh-hsien had a fairy godparent, though this being is a male in Yeh-hsien’s story while it was a female in the original Cinderella story. Furthermore, Yeh-hsien attended a cave-festival (the equivalent of a ball) where she lost her shoe. Afterward, a search was undergone to discover the owner of this missing shoe. The elements in Yeh-hsien that differ from those of the original Cinderella story include the magical fish, which had no existence at all in the original story, and the death of the stepmother and stepsister.

Moreover, the seaside town of T’o-han is a very immoral, deadly place. Women were pointlessly murdered during the search for the shoe’s owner. Yeh-hsien had not been permitted the happy ending that Cinderella had.
