PART I Historic period Shakespeare wrote this during the period of 1600 to 1610. This was a time of social upheaval. The ruler ship of the king was under pressure. The society was also under pressure due to religious enlightenment. Labute Wrote during the early 1960. In the USA there was social unrest. The country was dealing with the assassination of a president. The country was fighting an unpopular war. The country was also dealing with the sexual revolution. Author Shakespeare was born in and lived in England... At the age of 18, he married and fathered three children: Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in an actor, writer, and part owner of a company. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeares private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his appearance sexuality and religion. There has been some question as to whether the works attributed to him were written by others. Labute was born in Michigan USA. He grew up in the west of the USA. He studied theater BYU. He joined the Mormon Church. He produced a number of plays that pushed the envelope of what was acceptable at the conservative religious university. Some of his works were shut down after their premieres. However, he also was honored as an outstanding playwright at BYU. He also did graduate work in New York City. Macduff He shows a dedication to truth over falsehood. He is seen as a moral character. This is particularly true and adheres to his values. He therefore chooses not to succumb to Macbeth’s. He displays a humanistic alternative to strict standards of morality. He exhibits a rigidity that ignores strict moral judgment (Muri Simone Alter) Three Witches They represent darkness, chaos, and conflict. Their role is as agents and witnesses. Their presence communicates treason and impending doom. In general, witches were seen as worse than rebels. They were not only political traitors, but spiritual traitors as well. Much of the confusion that springs from them comes from their ability to straddle the plays borders between reality and the supernatural. The witches lines in the first act: "Fair is foul, and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air" are often said to set the tone for the remainder of the play by establishing a sense of confusion. Indeed, the play is filled with situations in which evil is depicted as good, while good is rendered evil. The line "Double, double toil and trouble,” communicates the witches intent. It is to create trouble for the natural persons ( Landy R) .Pygmalion This is an ancient mythical character. There are many versions of this. Most notably used in Shakespeare’s writings. This mythical character shows in some way that of human inner conflict. It also shows the blurring of the lines of reality and fiction. Ism mostly achieved in plays and writings. This character has a dislike or noninterest in women. His sculpting work is that of none other than a woman. He ignores prostitutes and falls in love with the same woman sculpture. The fantasy comes in when he seeks mystical help to make it come alive. It becomes a live and he marries it. The ultimate in fiction is shown when it bears him a child. Cawdor This is the equivalent of a city. It is the place in Scotland. The story line and plot is developed. The thane who is a character in the play is identified as being linked to this place. E.A.T. Experiments in Art and Technology was a non-profit and organization. It was established to develop collaborations between artists and engineers. The group operated by providing person-to-person contacts between artists and engineers. The organization worked to promote projects that expanded the role of the artist in contemporary society. It also helped eliminate the separation of the individual from technological change. Performances were held in New York City. Twenty-eight regional chapters were established throughout the U.S. in the late 1960s to promote collaborations between artists and engineers. In 2002 the University of Washington hosted a reunion. It was to celebrate the history of these regional liaisons and consider its legacy. Duncan Duncan is a father-figure. He is generous... However, the role is full of irony. He is completely deceived in the intents of Macbeth. A modern reader may view him as an incompetent monarch. He represents moral order within the play. This is why his murder signals the onset of chaos. Adam He is the Sculptors work. He appears to be doing his job. He is the work of Evelyn, the sculptor. He becomes the work of her hands. This is because he looses sense of reality. He seems to be unable to recognize art as one entity. And reality as another. I other words reality is separate from imagination. Iverness The capital of the highlands and islands of Scotland. This was the head quarters for Duncan’s army. He was the ruler of this region. He led at least two military assaults from here. Jenny She is in a courtship and has plans to marry Philip. In addition she has a secret relation ship with Adam. In the process Evelyn seeks to under mine the relation ship between Adam and jenny. The reason is that Evelyn is able to manipulate Adam for her own pleasures. The added complexity is that Adam and Philip are best friends. Banquo Banquo is often interpreted as a similarity and a contrast to Macbeth. He resists evil where Macbeth embraces it. His motives are unclear in some cases... He does nothing to accuse Macbeth of murdering the king. He has reason to believe Macbeth is responsible for the crime. This can be interpreted as Banquo being a silent accomplice to Macbeths early crimes. Banquo also tells his son at one point that he is having dark dreams. One wonders whether he has dreamed of killing Macbeth. He could then take the throne and fulfill the Witches prophecy. PART II The Oedipal aspect should be seen in Lady Macbeth as anti-mother. The mother is seen as gentle and caring for the child. In this case she considers destroying the child. Gentleness is suppressed as she urges Macbeth to be violent (Maddelena Cheryl) . He in turn commits murder. She is an accomplice in the crime. She handles the knife afterwards (Amir Gilit. Lev-weisel Rachael). It appears as though she does so without remorse or feeling. The Motherland: Scotland and Museum Here there is an imaginary account. These places give a real life character to the drama (Haen Craig, Weber Anna) . Scotland recognizes a place and time in history. The museum does the same. In this case it has the boundaries of an authority and expected conduct The Theater This is the writer’s general environment (Marxen Eva) . It provides a form of laboratory for our analysis. It sets a physical area and time limit. It provides the scenery and group o persons. This makes it possible to highlight certain facts. In addition it makes it possible to down play certain facts (Hass-Cohen Noah) . This combination makes it possible to tell the story as we want to tell it. The Macbeths were already married and are main characters in the drama. This makes them life partners. Evelyn and Adam are the main characters in the drama. They are partners in a love relationship.
