The Depiction of Crimes in the US Poetry - Term Paper Example

Poetry Few of the criminals are very generic and common in all over the nation lay on the globe of the world. America is the biggest country where people of all kind, all standards, all color and of almost all countries are found living together. Though, for being all kind of people living together, literacy and illiteracy for living ethics is not possible to spread equally. This ends up with more and more agony living in America. This painful life was uncontrollable by the government of the country. People don't give respect to other religions or whites were considered to be up standards where as blacks were supposedly to work as slaves. People were kidnapped or trapped in a manner to be tortured only to attain the money. Stealing, robbery, theft were increasing day by day. It was not only suffering in life but terror of slaughtering getting high to its peak. Blacks were suffering from the injustice of Whites, poor were suffering from the miseries country facing due to the colonizing, Children were killed, a totally a horrifying condition was being seen in the country which was only be settled down by changing the thoughts of mind and soul. Many of the authors and poets in addition with the politicians and government tried psychologically to eliminate the major crimes like, terrorism of slaughtering, racism, tortures and literate people from the sufferings and miseries faced by the country due to diasporas and colonized. "Footnote to the Amnesty Report on Torture" By Margret Atwood Margret Atwood, one of the famous Canadian writer known for her novels, but is a good author and writer to brief poems, articles, short stories and few she worked for television and movies as well. She was born in Ottawa, Ontario on 18 November, 1939 and started her writings since she was young. She qualified herself in English literature and taught English for some time in University of British Columbia. She was near to nature and wrote many poems and novels about the environment, personalities, and natural world. Moreover, she was a fervent writer for the kids and though wrote many poems and short stories for them. She was a keen observer and wants to participate herself in the efforts to make the country hygienic to breath in freely. She enthusiastically wrote many short stories and poems to tell the world and the people of her country what they are suffering with and morally help them to eliminate the crimes. "Footnote to the Amnesty Report on Torture" was written in 1978. It was a poem compiled in simple English explaining the conditions of the torture chamber along with different shocking and horrifying images in the poem about the torture chamber showing the harsh features of politics. She from the very first stanza clarified the view of the torture chamber by resembling it with something very worst. She made the readers imagine that it neither resembles the dungeon with cob webs, nor it reminds you of opera sets which are being fully designed but by words the dangerous one. It actually looks a lot like to a dirty, grimy, smutty and unclean railway station. However, this railway station is being cleaned every time by a hooked man but still it smells stinky as if it's a hospital with the smell of antiseptics and spirits. These stinky smells are in cooperated with the smell of blood. Her simile for the smell of the blood is equivalent to the one rising from the butcher's shop. She in her following stanza of the poem mentions the briefs about the man working there as a sweeper, cleaning floors all the time. This man cleans all the remnants spread all over the chamber the previous night. The torture is so harsh that people who are brave they forgets their bravery, innocent people may die, their torn fingers, or may hacked tongue are thrown away. To this all that cleaning man is grateful that e has this job to clear vomit, covering the dead bodies or collecting fingers rather than breaking or killing somebody. The words, Margaret Atwood used in the poem "Footnote to the Amnesty Report on Torture" for defining the cruelty of the word are: "Some have nothing to say, which also doesn't matter. Their warped bodies too, with the torn fingers and ragged tongues, are thrown over the spiked iron fence onto the Consul's lawn, along with the bodies of children burned to make their mothers talk."1 This man was not named as it can be any body that sweeps and cleans those blood stains and eliminated the disgusting smell. He himself has even lost his smelling power after viewing the deadening trials practiced in that persecute chamber. However, he is happy for not being a torturer and earning for his wife and children but he himself is filled with the fear that one day he might be the victim of the government and for that time while his work he don't listens or see anything done in front of them. He is fearful of the cruelty of the world which may kill the innocent without any of the reason but victimizing him. Margaret Atwood, here direct fingers towards the government's or political systems which shows their cruelty victimizing the innocent even if they are children; leaving the actual victims free to rule. "The Devil's Language" By Marilyn Dumont However, at the same time Marilyn Dumont with her book on The Devil's Language tried to literate people for preserving their culture in colonized world and eliminate racism. She was born in 1955 in Northeastern Alberta. She was again a Canadian writer and had a nice writing experience on humor and other culture relative subjects. She wrote poems and participated in video productions as well. She was inspired from Indians who were however being colonized but have preserved their culture, heritage and language. As she answered in one interview conducted by Rob McLennan she said, "Since one of my reasons for writing, originally, was to give voice to the struggles of my ancestors, my 'race' has been central to my writing." 2 Though, Marilyn Dumont through his writings and Poem "The Devil's Language" clarify that however the world is getting populated but it don't allow a person to leave its mother language or culture in spite of copying others more literate to them. Her emphasis was on the racial discrimination lies due to the English and other languages. English is however, known to be a universal language and is spoken all over the world but it don't means to leave the mother culture or mother language totally. "Martin Luther King" By George Bowering George Bowering was a child poem writer who s near to peace and harmony. He wants children of the country or all the readers may get the moral to leave peacefully with one another forgetting the racism discriminations, assessing ad torturing people, etc. In his poem from very start he states that despite the fact that there is no justice in the world and people are fighting to one another for none other than for the reason of living style, but its better to be calm and silent, by avoiding and boycotting the evil actions and going against the violence. George in his poem "Martin Luther King", states clearly that brutality is not to inspire of by his words: "You'd not inflame, but still inspire, With hope that wouldn't yield. You called for boycotts, not for fire, With faith your only shield."3 He wrote this poem to abolish distress and miseries caused by the racism in the country. He wished to equalize the Blacks and Whites on the same ground before he dies. He wants America a bright country having silent protesting rather than fights and fires all around. He wants people to be free of standards and is equally injustice. Conclusion Crimes are every where around the world but to identify and control them matters which American government took the step towards. Not only American politicians but authors and media players also participated to morally emphasis the citizens of the country for noticing and considering the crimes. George Bowering, Marilyn Dumont and Margret Atwood wrote different articles and poems to finger the crimes and make the citizens psychologically inhabitant to abort them. George Bowering showed his dream via many speeches and poems like "Martin Luther King" that he want people living on the same land should have same justice i.e., White boys and Girls should go to school and for the work together with Black boys and girls rather than considering the Black as slave and give them their justified rights. Despite the fact of eliminating racism, Marilyn Dumont draws the public attention through her writings and poems like The Devil's Language, which wherever people are living and are colonized, should keep the hold on their culture and help their language to grow. Similarly, "Footnote to the Amnesty Report on Torture" by Margret Atwood directly fingers towards the politicians and their harsh attitude towards innocent to inquiry or investigate horribly in torture cells.
