Extract of sample "A&P by John Updike"

In the story given, the feelings of Sammy changes quite a lot for the girls. The change described is not a natural one and Updikes takes great care in describing it as interesting as possible. His specialty lies in not stating explicitly any changes in the characters' feelings. Updike has a reasonably great style of concealing the changes in feelings of his characters so well that the reader is forced to re-evaluate the disposition of a character as the story progresses. Further, there the manner in which Sammy's traits are displayed in the story are an Updike signature.

Though there can be negative criticism on his style of revealing Sammy's traits and his desire for the girls to notice his heroism, the manner in which it was progressively brought forward makes it a true piece of literature. I believe that the exposition of the story was where the sad part of the story began and that is when Updikes' narrative style also took a chance. Updike tries to communicate the fact that Sammy learned a lesson from his experience with the girls and by saying "how hard the world.

hereafter" Sammy tries to say he has learned that there are harder things to worry about in life ahead. The narrative style can sometimes be confusing and hard to understand for the novice reader to Updike style, however, once the reader finds the "loopholes" they become a part of the narrative and understand exactly what Updikes wants them to.In conclusion, it can only be remarked that the story writing style of John Updikes is unique and has a style of its own. Though a striking resemblance to the old Gothic novels can reminisce at any line in the story A&P, Updikes handles the story characters and the plot with literary professionalism.

It is, after all, a treat to the literature freak to read a piece of writing by Updikes and enjoy the literary content to their fullest satisfaction. It is highly recommended that the admirer of one of the stories of John Updikes should go on and read his other novels and stories in order to quench their thirst for this kind of literary writing that none other than John Updikes has been able to pen down so interesting so far.
