In spite of all the challenges she has to endure, Mary Johnson does not falter in her faith, she keeps reading her bible for motivation and strength from the scriptures. She even becomes an inspiration to others in their points of weakness by encouraging their weak souls and spirits to soldier on in life, despite their challenges, by keeping the faith and reading the bible. Every Christian can relate to this work because it presents the very basis of Christian life, which is characterized by a test of faith through challenges and temptations to deviate from right living.

In this regard, Mary Rowland’s work is very important to me at this point of my life because it inspires me to forge ahead in life despite the many challenges I encounter. I am encouraged to have courage to face disaster knowing that God will deliver me from damnation, and above all, I am encouraged to seek the strength that I need from the scriptures of the bible. Instead of wavering in faith and losing hope in the face of disaster, I am encouraged to remain steadfast and to submit to God’s will and plan. . The narrative demonstrates how Mary Rowland maintains stable family relations throughout her trials and tribulations; for instance, when her family is enslaved, she clings to her youngest daughter and tries all her best to protect her from the natives.

Even so, when her child is shot by the offenders, Mary’s incredible maternal instinct is still at play because, unlike some mothers who would abandon their child in such a case, she desperately clings to her in hope that she would survive (Lavender). Mary is able to keep a constant check on the rest of her family throughout the period of her captivity; this trend demonstrates her genuine care for all she considered family, friends and neighbors. Her respect for God is equally demonstrated through her endeavor to do good by remaining steadfast in her faith and inspiring others to do the same; this is in spite of all the challenges that push her to deviate from puritanical values.

How this work improves my understanding and broadens my insights This work has broadened my understanding of the essence of life in general and purposeful Christian living in particular; I have discovered that puritans may encounter very difficult situations and experiences, which may cause them to drift away from their puritanical values. However, these challenges are just a test of faith and puritans should not falter or despair in their faith; instead, they should uphold these values of purposeful Christian living and find their solace in the bible.

I have also gathered that brotherhood is a key element of purposeful Christian living because it makes the challenges of daily Christian living surmountable; true brotherhood should entail encouraging one another in faith even in times of great doubt and tribulations.
