Aylmer is obsessed with the simple flaw in his beloved wife. He simply sees the birthmark in his wives face a challenge posed by nature to his scientific ability. He dreams one night that he is taking out Georgiana’s heart in the pursuit of removing the birthmark. Aylmer understands the birthmark isn’t simply skin deep and needs a very strong potion to remove it. The potion he invents removes the hand shaped mark described as “a crimson stain upon the snow”. But, it eventually kills Georgiana as well.
The flawless beauty dies with a perfect face telling Aylmer not to worry about rejecting the “best the earth could offer” – her. Aylmer’s character strongly reminds us of the ‘Bodhi’ character in the movie “Point Break”. He is a surfer gone amok who risks his life and many other people’s lives to ride the perfect wave in a great storm. Some people just live to fulfill their mind’s unique desires. They go to any extent to accomplish their dreams. Aylmer is one such person.
His joy of removing the birthmark compensates the loss of losing his lovely wife. Such characters only personify what a wild and barbaric place world would be if every person starts to live according to their wish without any moral like compassion. Georgiana is a victim of one such ruthless desire. She succumbs out of love on her free will with the sole of aim of teaching her intellectual psycho husband a valuable lesson. She believes her death will make him understand he cannot win nature ever and succeeds to a certain extend in proving the fact.
There are many Hawthorne stories describing people with double personalities.
