A Touch of Fantasy Land: We cannot ignore the fact that Dunsany’s writings revolve around fantasies and the dreamland. In his short story, The field, Dunsany speaks of the horror and fear of modernism that was the basic element of London’s busy life and he fears that this life would dominate the beauty of the hills and people would start forget to appreciate the beauties of nature. Dunsany clearly states that how he enjoyed riding on a bicycle to praise the beauty of the hills around him but one can enjoy the mighty splendor of those hills by passing through them on a train.
Further in his writing Dunsany tells that as soon as a person by-pass the city life and enters into nature’s beautiful sphere, he would forget all about the nightmares and horrors of city life. In his writing, we analyze writer’s appreciation for nature. One cannot undermine the love of nature that reflects in the writing. While reading the passages of the The Field, one forgets the hardships and miseries of his life. It is the magical art that surrounds the writing of Dunsany which pushes the soul of a person deep into the thoughts of a “happy land” where one sees only happiness, nature, colors and flowers blooming around him.
While reading the story, one could feel himself floating in the air which surrounds the mighty hills where the dreams of Dunsany breathes. The writer has given in detail even about the minute things that may mean nothing to a person or which we cannot judge from our naked eye. To him “the yellow bridge” is a gateway to his “fairyland.” We can say that Dunsany writings and powerful imagination makes a reader to escape from his cruel surroundings where every single soul is distressed, every soul has scars on its body which are gifted to him by the annoying city life.
This strong imagination pushes a person to realize that nature can be regarded as a comfort zone where the butterflies dance like fairies, winds blows with their power, fields stand tall among the mighty hills and where the sky has no limit. There are very few writers that can make a reader to build his own land of dreams and Dunsany is one of them. In this short story, Dunsany speaks about the peacefulness and the beauty of fields that compel him to come over there. For him, those green fields were his route to escape from the busy and dull life of London which he states as “monster.
” Dunsany tells of his experience in a very poetic manner. He states that how the sound of floating stream attracted him. The sound soothes his unrest soul and he is sure of the fact that he would miss the beauty of his surroundings, the very moment he will enter in London again. To develop the better understanding of Dunsany’s writing, it is important for a reader to build his own fantasyland in his mind in order to enjoy the beauty of the nature as the story progresses. Dunsany also shares his experience of waking up his poetic friend from the dreams of money and city life.
In his writing we can say that Dunsany has powerfully expressed the thought which makes a reader believe that people have forgotten about the beauty of nature; they do not know how to appreciate the peacefulness as they are so busy in making money.
