This was exceptionally done by Virginia Woolf in her novel To the Lighthouse since she was able to take the readers from one time to another, displaying consciousness through the lines of the characters. This was manifested in one of her lines which stated: “Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision” (Woolf). The use of language in her novel mainly displayed a variety of emotions. These words imply significant meanings that describe the personality of each character.
The use of language also indicates the combination of what the character has stated and what the narrator tries to imply. The lines that state “.impressions poured in upon her of those two men, and to follow her thought was like following a voice which speaks too quickly to be taken down by one's pencil.” (Woolf) proves the exceptional use of language in the writer’s work. Virginia Woolf uses symbols on her writings that suggest the significance of a woman writer as well as the traditions of coming up with a certain novel that is related to her race or culture.
Virginia opts to utilize symbols to make her works fit in the modern aspect in the world of fictional writing. The use of symbols is apparent with this line, “The lights of the town and of the harbour and of the boats seemed like a phantom net floating there to mark something which had sunk” (Woolf). The symbols indicate what the writer tries to imply. Heart of Darkness Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is as exceptional and fascinating novel as that of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse.
The use of parallelism is evident in Joseph Conrad’s work since he had the same experience of manning a ship and had his fair share of adventure in the good and bad side of the world. Ambiguity in Joseph Conrad’s work is noted due to the morality issues in the story. These issues are focused on the good and bad side of countries inhibiting other parts of the world. The main character, Charlie Marlow, travelled along with the ship and the story itself. The story presented the cruelty of these countries as well as the ambiguity issues on the personality of various types of individuals.
The impressionist technique is utilized by Joseph Conrad since he portrayed philosophy and imagination to human behavior. Furthermore, his personal experience contributed to this technique and made impressionism more apparent to his work. The symbolism is said to enhance the impressionist technique used in Joseph Conrad’s work. The imagination of the writer implied a symbolic nature that interpreted what he was trying to deliver with his novel. The lines, “A beardless, boyish face, very fair, no features to speak of, nose peeling, little blue eyes, smiles and frowns chasing each other over that open countenance like sunshine and shadow on a wind-swept plain” state the significant use of symbols and Impressionist technique in Joseph Conrad’s novel (Conrad).
The work of Joseph Conrad is more associated with ethical issues that encircle both right and wrong deeds. It was easier for the author to create ideas and imagination as he was able to relate it with his own experience. The unique aspect is that he used a certain character to represent the novel. Difference and Similarities One known difference of the two novels is the setting. Although, both are
