During her dream, Angela feels fear for the character that speaks to her, as she reflects on children’s fear of clowns. . She feels the same fear that she feels about her father sometimes, as it says “For a horrible instant, he was looking at her the way Poppa sometimes did”. These horrible instants are all too common in Angela’s life. Angela trusts in the devil and goes on to live a better version of her life that is based on that trust. She still fears fear, but it is no longer the fear of falling that would wake her up in her sleep.

Instead, she begins to fear that she has given too much to the devil in order to protect her on the high wire, and perhaps fears something worse is in store. However, when he chair begins to fall, the trust wavers again—she still seems to have little trust in her family, and his emotions are dominated this time not so much by fear but by a great hope that everything will turn out right and soundly. For a moment she thinks the balance may be regained, and her hope remains with her as she falls, heart pounding.

She recalls the moment of giving her trust to the devil, and as she does so she transforms into a bat. As a bat, Angela begins to lift away from the ground, free of her fear of falling. But just as quickly as she plummets changed directions, she changes her mind about the decision she has made. She begins to hope that her features will change back to her youthful human form at some point and that she won’t remain a bat. “Surely her youthful beauty would be restored. After all, he'd promised no tricks…” says the story.

Her trust is once again brought into question, as she wonders about his promise. As her fear begins to grow in her once more, she chases one last hope that she can soar toward God and seek forgiveness. However, she is stopped by an invisible wall and finds that the worst has happened.
