8 July “How to a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl, or halfie” by Junot Diaz Summary The article How to date a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl, or halfie has been written by Junot Diaz. In this article, Diaz has suggested several ways to boys that may way avail to date a girl belonging to any ethnicity. The story throws light upon the usual stereotypes of girls which influence a boy’s style of approaching them because he has preconceived notions about the respective stereotypes. Girls belonging to different ethnic origins are known for their attitude and behavior in particular settings and need to be dealt with accordingly in order to have them date you.

Throughout the article, Diaz has maintained an instructional tone. Diaz tells what a boy should do when he tries to call the girl next door and instead of her father picks up the receiver at the other end of the line. Diaz tells how to engage girl of a particular color into conversation, what kind of tactics work for what color of girls and other similar strategies so that the boy ends up earning the confidence and interest of the girl and have her with him for the rest of the life. Junot Diaz has suggests that to earn the confidence of girl of a particular ethnicity, a boy should hide his original self and should show off in specific manners.

Analysis I do not approve of Diaz’s idea that an individual needs to modify himself in order to adjust with a girl from a particular ethnic origin because stereotypes mostly project false image of a person. It is too immature of a person to judge or estimate a girl’s likes and dislikes from the stereotypical image associated with her ethnic origin. I grant that the article is not racist, as the author has not undermined or underestimated the interests of girl from any ethnicity, but I maintain that the distinction between dating styles and approaches on the basis of race of a girl is impractical.

Occasionally, I find the language a bit humiliating towards girls of particular ethnicities. For example, “A local girl will have hips and a nice ass but won't be quick about letting you touch her. A white girl might give it up right then. Don't stop her” (Diaz). This essentially vilifies the sanctity of white girls, which I do not approve of. Being feminine, girls may have their own distinct vision which may totally be in conflict with that of the boys, but girls of a particular race do not have any conflict of views with those of another race until culture comes into the scenario.

As long as the culture is same, race does not play any role in depicting choices and influences in life. Thus, a boy should not try to put a fake mask in order to impress girls. Instead, he should maintain good moral conduct. This would not only make him beloved in the eyes of girls, but also in the eyes of the whole society because display of good moral conduct is what really appeals to human nature.
