? The Journey to Becoming a Technical Support Manager of # and The Journey to Becoming a Technical Support Manager Introduction Parents always ask the question, what do you want to become when you grow up? This question, in one way or another, has helped us into discovering the real essence of life. Choosing the right career is a crucial decision that one has to make. It's like choosing either hell or heaven. Hell would mean living an unworthy life, a life that has no direction while heaven would mean living a contented life, being able to do things according to what a person has always dreamed of. Selecting the type of profession that a person wants to attain is like deciding on what to do with life in general. When a person reaches the stage of maturity, priorities in life are easily ranked from the least up to the greatest one. Decisions are made through critical thinking and not just according to what other people would say. Limitations are clear and there is an extent as to the level of pleasure that should be experienced. The goals in life are easily determined, like finishing a degree in college. After all the hardships encountered in order to finish a degree, the next step is to determine the right career path, it seems to be an easy job, but actually it is not. Choosing a Professional Career Finding the right career is a process that will affect one's life in a major way. "Career Planning" is a planned process that aids a person to make decisions that are carefully thought of and not made on the last-minute. Never feel immobilized when thinking about what career to pursue, but just sit back and relax and then imagine those moments that have greatly caused happiness and enjoyment (Fisher, 2004, pp. 26-27). Thinking about inspiring things in life may lead to the right decision when one is about to make a choice. For a profession to become a career there has to be a chance or possibility of promotion and development. Man's will to satisfy these wants in life motivates him to find the most suited career path. The realization of dreams depends upon a successful career. People believe that earning a degree is parallel to the attainment of a career, but actually it is just the first step on the road to a successful career. In fact there are even situations where academically brilliant students become unsuccessful with their careers for the reason that the chosen profession was not carefully pondered upon (Bhuyan, 2002, p. 11). Arriving at a conclusion as to the profession that a person would practice may not be easy, particularly to those who are at the starting point of their professional life. Since entering the school in kindergarten up to the last college days, things just circle on school then back home. So now the journey to life begins and the first step into choosing a career is to discover oneself. It's time to set aside what other people have to say. Digging deeply into the inner self is needed to arrive at a decision on the type of career that a person wants to live by. It has something to do with identifying strengths or the things that one is capable of doing (Bailey, n.d., p. 7). Actually, answers as to the available career options are outnumbered by the questions of what must really be chosen (Bailey, n.d., p. 2). Life begins after college, and that is based on reality. In this highly competitive world, finding a job is a struggle to those who are not gifted with great knowledge and skills, especially in the field of Information Technology where companies often have high standards when considering or hiring applicants. Many of today’s youth opted to take up a degree in this field because of the emergence of the many companies offering technical support jobs. Technical support is a worldwide demand nowadays. The Information Technology industry provides a wide range of opportunity to aspiring Information Technology professionals considering their different specializations (Fisher, 2004, pp. 26-27). The Technical Support Profession An occupation is imperative to maintain a well-balanced life, where all the essential needs are easily obtained. It opens the door for people to express themselves through the skills and knowledge that are inherent in them (Bailey, n.d., p. 5). In the area of technical support where every day is a stressful day, major adjustments have to be made so that an employee would eventually feel at ease with the working environment. Because the practice of technical support in companies is new in the information technology industry, there are no formalizations yet to its application. Theories and troubleshooting techniques used were from existing methods or were conceptualized informally through the efforts of the team assigned to do the job. Despite of that, breakthroughs in technology happen every single day and the same time creating more demands for technical support. There has to be a wall that will separate the personal life of an individual from the working environment. Like in the case of an Information Technology (IT) professional, a technical support manager often stays longer in the company to finish and check everything. Hopefully they still have the power to think normally despite of the pressure that is in the nature of the job (Sanchez, 2004, p. 16). It requires a lot of time and effort to finally become a technical support manager. Definitely, it is impossible to instantly get the position; years of experience in this type of work is needed in order to get qualified. But that does not mean that one must give up on the ambition to become a technical support manager. In as much as technology is present, there will also be an increasing need for technical support (Sanchez, 2009, p. 27). Technical support managers are burdened with many responsibilities. They are given the duty to inspect the work that is being done by the systems’ programmers. They deal with not just the simple problems in the operations but the whole sustainment of an organization's systems (Sanchez, 2009, p. 16). For sure there is more stress experienced than the amount of salary received. Well even though there are various issues that are being thrown to technical support, those things can never hinder its progress. No profession is difficult if one has the ability to endure all the detrimental comments of those who do not believe in the essence of the profession. Also on the other hand, if the technical support manager is highly committed to the job, stress does not affect much to the job performance. Problems may be considered as tough challenges that will help develop the ability to handle more complicated problems in the near future. Conclusion It is always good to think ahead of time with your plans and goals in life. When the time comes that a decision has to be made then no time is wasted since one is able to decide quickly and precisely on matters that deal with life. Being able to find a professional career that is fitted to one’s personality would be a big help to living a life that is not prone to negativity. There is no fulfillment when one is not capable of doing things in the way that it is supposed to be done. In the determination of a profession, a person must bear in mind the importance of passion or the desire to do the job in spite of the many consequences that are present. There are always struggles in whatever profession an individual will choose, the important thing is that one must not be discouraged to pursue it, because success is dependent on the fulfillment of one’s ambition.
