In literature, the mention of the misfit characters occurs myriad times. The characters which are generally not portrayed with the common conventions of human nature are considered as misfit characters. But these misfit characters rise beyond the normal parameters of human conventions to portray certain things. In the story, “The Lady with the Pet Dog” by Anton Chekhov and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ Connor portray some misfit characters within their short context of the tight-lipped plot which evoke and stand for certain social causes or depict some particular class of people in the world.
In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor the protagonist of the story, the anonymous Grandmother seems to be the most misfitting character crossing all the limits of generic conventions of apparent human nature and conventions. Grandmother at the outset of the story starts behaving weird. She puts her best suit so that if the family, setting out for vacation, meets an accident on the road then she could be recognized as a woman. She continuously persuade her son and grandchildren to visit Tennessee rather than Florida and throughout the journey, she keeps on nagging about it and telling the children the stories about the home with the secret chambers until Bailey as her son lose his control and ends up his journey into a dirty street crashing the car into a ditch.
After this incident, the old lady understands that she has made a mistake and misguided them to a wrong lane where the family meets death at the hands of the escaped murderer, Misfit, and his gang.
