?Introduction Business management is wide field that incorporates various aspects geared towards ensuring the overall business success of an organization. There are various types of organizations including but not limited to huge multinationals, state corporations, partnership organizations, sole proprietorships and small businesses. However, one key requirement for these types of businesses is that they are all geared towards business success defined by how these businesses fulfill their predetermined objectives. The three books chosen for the report are linked with respect to how they outline various important aspects in business management. One book approaches business management from a generalized perspective of business looking at the core aspects of any business. The second book looks at an organization as a holistic entity with various aspects that are interconnected. Finally, the third book looks at a particular aspect of business management which is communication. Business Book 1 Level 3 (EDEXCEL) by John Bevan The book looks at selected attributes of business with some most of the aspects addressed by different authors. The book begins by looking at the wider business environment where it addresses issues pertaining to the external environment from which a business operates. The external environment is very important for any business because consumers, business resources and competitors all exist within the external environment of any business. Business environment is expounded further in the following topic that addresses business resources. Business resources are essentially the key aspects that support the smooth running of the business without which a business would not operate. For instance, a business will always need people who perform various tasks to ensure that the business operates smoothly. Human resource includes key decision makers for the business, implementers of the decisions made and persons who are used to execute the decisions that are made. The next three topics introduce learners to marketing. Marketing is an important component for a business entity because it determines the performance of the business in the market place. The book addresses issues such as advertisement that ensure that the products of a business are effectively popularized in the market. Furthermore, the book brings out the importance of marketing in an environment characterized by competition from rival businesses. The book creates a concise relationship between marketing and communication in business and explains that effective marketing depends on how marketing aspects are communicated to the consumers. Aspects outlined include creative product promotion, market research and internet marketing. These selected aspects of marketing according to the book are important in ensuring the success of business marketing in the contemporary world. For instance, before an organization engages in a marketing initiative it is important that an organization employs creative approaches that will stand out in the midst of competitors. Creativity is all about uniqueness of the strategy employed to ensure that the organization catches the eyes of consumers quickly. The next two topics involve human resource management to ensure that they operate in line with the mission and vision of an organization. According to the book, the most important aspect in developing an effective human resource is to recruit the right people for the right jobs. In addition, it is also important to organize the human resource into teams that will optimize production. The final two topics outline the role played by technology in ensuring business success in an organization. For instance, the book addresses the effect technology has on the development of a business. Communication has been particularly mentioned in the book as being an aspect of technology that has significantly affected business development. The topic also mentions the role played by website design in attracting consumers to the website of a particular organization. Management & Organizational Behavior 9th Edition by Laurie J. Mullins The book essentially looks at a business as a biological entity with various organs that need to work together to ensure the success of the whole. In essence, when one organ has a problem the whole will not be able to function properly. The book is even equipped with case studies at the end of every topic to ensure that learners are able to relate the theoretical aspects outlined and practice. The book emphasizes on the various ways in which the organs within an organization relate including various strategies that can be used to nurture the effective functioning of an organization in a harmonious way. The book has various important topics followed by subtopics that delve deeper into the topics outlined. Some of the issues include the role of an organization in the wider community within which it exists otherwise known as corporate social responsibility. Organizations do not exist as separate entities but are part of wider communities within which they must operate in harmony. Organizations should be responsible for creating a good image of the organization within the wider community and looking into ways to improve the lives of the communities they live in. For instance, an organization can sponsor sporting activities as part of encouraging healthy recreational activities for young people within the communities in which they operate. Another aspect addressed by the book is organizational performance and effectiveness. The performance of an organization should always be continuously evaluated to ensure that the stakeholders are aware of the direction the organization has taken with regard to development and success. The effectiveness of an organization is determined by its continued relevance within a given business field. Aspects such as democracy and learning within an organization are addressed. The most important aspect about the book is that it mentions the knowledge based evaluation strategies. Some of the evaluation strategies addressed in the book include the balance scorecard, total quality management (TQM) and fishbone analysis. The book also outlines business processes that can be used by organizations to ensure that they establish competitive advantage against their rivals. In essence, the book provides a holistic approach towards an organization troubleshooting and various strategies that can be used to deal with most of the challenges that face organizations in the contemporary society. Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English The book addresses grammar of spoken and written English from a professional perspective with aim of empowering people to communicate effectively. The book addresses English grammar from a holistic perspective providing examples mostly used in written and spoken literature in the contemporary world. The books has hundreds of examples with regard to graphs and written literature that show learners that are mostly used and the mistakes that are frequently made when using written or spoken English. The book even goes further to provide comparisons between British and American English to those learners who often confuse or mix the two. In addition, the book brings out emerging challenges facing people when using written and spoken English and the difference between written and spoken English. Critical Comparison All the three books seem to address their respective topics fairly well and it is evident that they address most of their intended issues. For instance, the first book about business addresses the topic of business well by outlining the key aspects of business, the management book brings out important issues about business management and the grammar book ensures that learners are exposed to most of the merging issues concerning grammar of both written and spoken English. However, their coverage and scope of topics vary. The management book seems to address issues in detail seeking and exposing students even to the subtle aspects about management. This is because the scope of the book is relatively narrow as compared to the other two. The business book covers a wider area and this affects its sharpness with regard to scope. There are many important aspects that the book addressed superficially perhaps in a bid to ensure that most aspects about business are mentioned. The grammar book had a relatively average scope and coverage as compared to the other two books. This is because the book addresses English language which is wider in scope but only chooses grammar. The easiest boo to use is the management book because the book has provided subtopics in addition to the major topics. The management book also has better organization with regard to the arrangement of the topics and subtopics. Reading the books has brought out a very important aspect in ensuring the suitability of a book to the intended audience in terms of structure, organization and content. The structure and organization of a book should be friendly enough to allow readers to locate specific topics without having to strain. In addition, the content of the book should be such that the user will find answers to most of their questions about the topic being addressed by the book. Books that are overly generalized address issues superficially leaving the reader with a lot of questions even after the reader has gone through them. In essence, a book should have the interest of the user at heart and address the needs of the intended user in a holistic manner. The readers should draw enjoyment and contentment when reading a book rather than feel like they are being punished. Recommendations For a book in business I would not recommend Business Book 1 Level 3 (EDEXCEL) by John Bevan because it is overly generalized and will only provide the learner with a superficial scope on issues pertaining to business. For management, I would recommend the book by Management & Organizational Behavior 9th Edition by Laurie J. Mullins because it approaches management from a practical and knowledge based perspective. The book is good both for learners of business management and for managers seeking for ways to increase their knowledge on current business issues with the aim of improving business success in their respective organizations. I would also recommend the Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English for people who are keen on sharpening their communication skills for business or other purposes. The book provides learners with solutions to some of the commonly made mistakes both in spoken and written English. Read More
