I hope you are prepared to assist me in this noble research. Thank you, I have read and signed the consent form, so I know what the research is all about Um, thank you. Now, I would like to begin with certain clarifications on how we are going to undertake to interview. In the first instance, um just remember that there is no right or wrong answer, concerning the questions. Secondly, just be truthful and genuine with your responses, cool? Cool All right, now first, I will request that you fill out the demographic survey. You have the right to fill it out after or whenever you feel that time is appropriate. In addition, you are not obliged to give out any information, which you might deem sensitive information relation to the execution of the study. If you are ready, I can begin the interview now, ready. Yep Now for the first question, when I say the word ‘youth’, what comes to mind, like what’s the first thing you perceive? When you say umm ‘youth’, I tend to think of the young energetic society members with the potentiality of executing diverse issues with ease in terms of physicality. I also think of the adolescent. And what age bracket would you think, ah, that would come under? Anyone who is in his or her teens up to the age of approximately 35-years-old What age would you consider that to be? Is it Mid 20s or Early 30s? How would you approximate the age group for the youth? Approximately 15 to 35-years-old Fair enough, what about when I say, umm, ‘young offender’, which conceptualization do not think of? I consider young offenders to be young people who have been convicted or cautioned concerning a criminal offense. These offenders tend to experience diverse treatment in comparison to adult criminals, thus subsequent trial in special youth courts. Moreover, young offenders tend to incorporate youth who engage in diverse crimes such as petty theft, stealing of properties, breaking into cars, and being disrespectful in general. From your response, what types of crimes do young offenders commit, like what is your view in relation to the crimes they commit? I believe that young offenders commit diverse crimes such as murder, forcible rape, robbery, and drug trafficking or peddling. Such age groups also commit crimes such as, um, harassing elderly people, graffiti, petty theft like shoplifting, and drink driving. Moving on, what sort of areas do you think young offenders commit these crimes? Are they common in high socio-economic regions? What do you think? Yea, I believe that cases of young offenders are common in middle to high socio-economic regions. This is because of the familiarity with the region. The familiarity is vital in aiding their escape after the each crime within the region. Moreover, conditions of such areas such as poverty and accessibility to drugs contribute to the increased incidents of young offenders. Now relating to your point on young offenders, do you think there is a specific group of young people who offend, from like what you come across concerning stereotypes or in the news? Is there a particular group, which associates with criminal offenses? From a personal perspective, I would say that young people that drop out of schools tend to have high or greater chances of committing criminal activities. In addition, ineffective socialization process might be a cause for engagement in criminal activities. Similarly, I tend to think that school or educational system is ideal in installing of discipline among students or the young people. Lack of education limits their chances to have quality or appropriate living conditions, thus increasing the opportunities for such groups to engage in criminal cases or incidents. How did you come up with this perception? What did you come across in the course of generating this perspective? Have you experienced anything like this to generate that perception? Um, I have been in the society for substantial period to know what goes on within the communities. I come to come across numerous young people who decide to terminate their educational processes. I see them hanging out on the road, you know in and about the shopping centers. They have the tendency of hanging about in groups. This creates a pattern in relation to how they move within the society. In addition, most crimes such as drink driving, robbery, and murder or shoplifting tend to associate with the young people who decide to terminate their educational processes and objectives. Concerning the patterns or trends, do you think there is any transformation in relation to criminal activities? Has crime increased, decreased, or stayed the same? What influences you answer or perception concerning the trend? Umm, over the years, I believe that crime has increased. I believe that the trend has something to do with increased accessibility to drugs and substances in and around the community. Drug peddlers and users tend to commit diverse criminal activities, which is ideal in understanding the substantial increase in the criminal activities, especially in the case of Australia. If I may ask again, what influenced your answer or rather response in relation to the increase, decrease, or flat crime rate within the society? What have you read or encountered with reference to crime within the community? The amount of teenagers or young people that get in trouble because of crime tend to influence my conceptualization in relation to the issue of crime within the society. In addition, current statistics indicate that there is substantial increase in the circulation of drugs and diverse substances within the society. People tend to exploit these opportunities and platforms to commit diverse criminal activities or incidents, thus the massive increase in the criminal issues. Drugs have diverse implications in relation to lives of the people, thus influencing their behavior on what is acceptable within the society. You continue to highlight the influence of drugs in the course of addressing critical issues concerning crime. What do you think happens to the young people when they are caught offending in any sort of crime with reference to petty theft, drugs, and shoplifting? What do you think is the response of the criminal justice system in the course of handling the criminal issues and incidents among the young offenders? From a personal perspective, I believe that the young offenders get away with most of the criminal activities or cases they commit. The criminal justice system tends to offer warnings to the young offenders rather than the usual conviction for the crimes within the society. In addition, there are rehabilitation centers and learning institutions for the young offenders. These correctional facilities tend to transform the behaviors of the young offenders in relation to engagement in crimes within the society. I think the young offenders enjoy special treatment from the criminal justice system. They are let off too easily concerning the crimes they commit. Would you term the court system as ah being too lenient in relation to the criminal cases concerning young offenders within the society? From a personal perspective, I think that the court systems have been ineffective and inefficient in the creation of substantial conditions for safety and security within the society. As a parent, I think more should be done in relation to limiting the circulation of drugs, thus reducing accessibility of the drugs and substances to the youths. There is substantial need for development and implementation of policies to help curb criminal incidents and drug use within the society. Following from your response, do you think parents have a role to play like punishing the youth severely for the crimes they commit? Moreover, is it appropriate for the parents to integrate substantial supervision or detention to curb crimes among the young offenders? Or rather, what role should parents play in helping to influence the punishment young offenders get when they engage in criminal incidents? In the first instance, I believe that it is appropriate for the parents to ensure that their children remain in schools or learning institutions to pursue educational goals and targets. Secondly, it is ideal for the parents to work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure that their children demonstrate acceptable behavior within the society. It is also appropriate for the parents to have a say in relation to enforcement of the laws or punishment concerning the criminal cases and incidents by the young offenders within the society. Parents have the obligation of being perfect role models for their children within the society. This calls for integration of effective and efficient socialization process with reference to enabling the young people to understand their obligations and expectations within the society. In your previous response, you attested that court systems are lenient. What do you think should happen to young offenders, umm what punishments would you consider appropriate in handling crimes involving young offenders? Firstly, it would be appropriate for the court systems to tighten the policies handling the crimes concerning young offenders. Secondly, there should be limited warnings and more actions with reference to rehabilitating behavior of the young offenders to fit effectively and efficiently within the society. From this perspective, there is substantial need for the authorities to trim diverse privileges for the young offenders to enable them serve jail terms for the criminal incidents, they execute. Similarly, it is ideal for the authorities to focus on preventing the occurrence of such events through prevention of accessibility of the drugs to the young people within the society. Moreover, the approach is appropriate in reducing the crime issues among the young people within the society. On the other hand, parents should enhance their involvement in addressing the issue of crime among their children. This makes it ideal for the parents to work in collaboration with the relevant authorities with reference to court systems. What privileges are you talking about in your response? Some of these privileges include access to alcohol, being allowed out on the roads, freedom of association with diverse groups, lack of long jail-term policies, and so on. It would be appropriate to limit the essence of these privileges among the young offenders. The approach will tighten the fight against crimes among the young offenders within the Australian society. What are some of the contributors to young offending? Do these factors relate to lack of family support, peer pressure, or inappropriate socialization? From a personal perspective, what facilitates young people to engage in criminal activities or incidents? Firstly, it is ideal to note lack of proper prioritization of goals and directions by the young people. These emanates from lack of effective and efficient supervision by the parents and other relevant authorities, thus ineffective socialization process. Moreover, young people engage in criminal issues to curb their economic conditions. They also tend to depend on drugs and other substances, thus constant engagement in criminal activities to carter for their needs. Lack of family support has been a factor in relation to increased cases of school dropout, thus provision of the perfect platform for the young people to engage in diverse critical activities. Where do you get your information in relation to young offenders? I get my information from news, online platforms, and constant observation on the events and activities taking place within the society. Mostly, I watch television channels in the morning and in the evening with the intention of understanding events and activities going on across the globe. How often do you access or use this media? I tend to use this media platform on a daily purpose to enable me understand my surrounding effectively and efficiently. Now leaving on a positive note here, because you have talked about drugs, privileges, and some mechanisms to curb crime, if you had the obligation to address crime or youth crime, what would you do to fix it? Why do think your approach will be effective? First, I would consider integration of strict rules and policies in relation to circulation of drugs and driving on the influence of alcohol or drugs. In addition, I would involve parents in relation to enforcement of the rules or punishments. I would also consider execution of diverse campaigns and seminars aiming at enlightening youths on negative implications of the drugs and engagement in crimes. The approach will be effective because it will be inclusive with reference to incorporating relevant stakeholders in pursuit of the goals and targets. Thank you Part II: Reflection From the above interview, I was able to draw some conclusions and reflections in relation to perceptions of the public on youth crime and young offenders. In the first instance, it is appropriate to note that youth crime relates to substantial usage of drugs, substances, and socialization processes within the society. It is also ideal to note that society provides the platform for the young offenders to execute their crimes. This is through increased accessibility to the drugs, as well as existing privileges on the criminal and justice systems. In the course of undertaking this interview, I was able to focus on assessing the cause of young offending. Some of the causes from the interview include increased usage of drugs and substances, dropouts from learning institutions, and socio-economic conditions. Moreover, lack of family support, inappropriate supervision, and detention from parents enable young people to contribute to the increased rate of crime in the cause of Australia.
