Citation Used in Law Cases - Essay Example

In some areas, the IBP case is not referenced according to the citation that is accorded to law cases. The footnote and endnote citation should also have been used so that they can provide additional notes or facts relevant to the case, for example, See Red Lobster, 8 BNA OSHC at 1763, 1980 CCH OSHD at p. 30,220., it would have been wise to provide a note summarising the facts of the case which are relevant or could have been applied to the case. In addition, in some instances, it would have been wise to summarise the decisions of the judges handling certain cases rather than giving the full account of the cases in the essay.

The citation of the IBP case is a bit awkward in that there are cases that are references to the case and consequently too long to be cited numerous times in the body of the essay. Such cases, after the initial mention in full in the essay, should be abbreviated when they are to be used in the essay again but nonetheless, the abbreviation should be in such a way that the case is distinct from the other abbreviations of other cases to avoid confusion with other references. For instance, it is common to use Ibid in law to show a reference that has been presided by the same reference.

For instance, in the IBP case, the reference, Red Lobster, 8 BNA OSHC at 1763, 1980 CCH OSHD at p. 30,220 among other references have been used several times and hence abbreviating the case after the initial mention of the case in the essay using law citation such as Ibid would have made the essay more professional (Deborah, pp. 10). In the IBP case, whenever precedent is being cited, it has been done in the form of a summary whereas, law citation follows that when precedent is being cited, the precedent cited from an official report is the one that holds more ground than the precedent cited from unofficial sources.
