The criminal justice system entails coordinated and interrelating components whose main aim is to ensure that justice for the offender and the complainant is achieved. The process starts with the police and all the way down to the corrections and all these stages require coordinated efforts from each partisan to ensure that justice is achieved at last.Prisons have the obligation to protect the general society by confining the offenders in a controlled environment or other facilities that are community-based and that are humane, safe, and cost-effective.

These facilities help to provide opportunities that help the offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens in the future. Corrections are carried out by a group of institutions that implement the orders of sentencing that are stipulated by the criminal courts. Being the last phase of criminal justice, it entails functions such as the authority of probation, jails, and the companies that carry out community correction roles, prisons as well as paroling authorities and it is worth noting that these are the principal components of corrections for criminal justice.

There is a great population behind bars which has strained the accommodation facilities and caused overcrowding in the prisons. Such is brought about by an increase in the crimes classified as crimes of survival. These are the crimes committed with the aim of meeting the basics or sustenance of standard with an example forgery to get a job or even stealing to get something to eat. This has greatly lead to the overcrowding of cells that were initially meant for one person.In the 1970s the war on drugs heightened by the increase of drug control agencies and aggressive actions that enforce laws like mandatory sentencing as well as no-knock warrants of arrests.

In the 1990s other get tough on crime laws were implemented which led to a 500%An increase in the inmate population making the cells overcrowded making some of the inmates start fighting back.
