Established on the philosophy that “A prosecutor’s office is to ensure justice and safety” It is from this that the Crime Strategies Unit (CSU) was created by D. A Vance in 2010 so as to target priority offenders and address crime issues by utilizing the collective resources of the D. A’s office, thus, developing and being able to implement strategies in an intelligence-driven prosecution (Manhattanda.org 2014).
The goal of the Crime Strategies Unit is to be able to foresee a crime before it happens and prevent it rather than after an arrest where D. A’s office prosecutes cases. By utilizing modern technology, for example, computers, prosecutors would be able to unearth crime patterns, drawing parallels among cases in particular areas thus, making well-informed decisions. The first steps of the Unit were getting relevant information and reference on every police precinct in Manhattan, and then analyzing the problems faced by the precinct while reviewing the crime statistics. From there an assistant District Attorney was assigned to each precinct thus, giving the police a point of contact in case of a crime or any insecurity. With the gathered information the CSU had an idea on the culprits who committed most crimes and the move became how to incapacitate them (Fox, 2013).

Since 1990 Manhattan has seen crime reduce in a dramatic way with a crime index falling by 80 percent, while murders are down by 86 percent (503 in 1990 vs. 70 in 2010). All these can be attributed to innovative strategic employment, concentrating resources on ground-breaking ideas, and the ability of the Police Department to work closely with its partners in law enforcement (Manhattanda.org, 2012). The goals of the A. D‘s office all try to build into one common idea which is crime reduction. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Strategies of Crime Control in Contemporary Society

...Strategies of Crime Control in Contemporary Society In the olden times, crime control was simply about punishment, often with no concept of the rights of the accused or due process. Women who were accused of being witches were burned at the stake, slow and painful deaths were used to punish petty criminals.  Criminal justice in any mature society always involves a balance of two competing interests: the need to protect the rights of the accused, and the need to combat crime and instill peace and order in society. “Legally, a crime is any act or omission proscribed by the criminal law and thus punishable by the state through the criminal justice system” (Davies, Croall and Tyrer, 2005) Legal systems in the civilized world – whether in civil...

Social and Situational Crime Prevention Strategies

The most widely recognized definition of crime prevention in the latter part of the 20th century refers to the difference between social and situational strategies of crime prevention—social strategies are generally called ‘community crime prevention’ (Stenson, 1991, p. 63). Many argue that the concepts of social and situational prevention are quite contemporary, even though the principles they support are not.
