Extract of sample "What Entails Corruption"

Corruption is defined as the misuse of public power with the intention of benefitting oneself. Often, we find that people are more willing to address mega scandals and do not pay attention to those instances where the amount involved is small. This essay discusses this issue and also assesses what would and what would not amount to corruption.

Different individuals in society perceive issues of corruption differently. An action could be friendly to some and unacceptable to others. It is for this reason that some people will regard an offer for a discounted meal to a police officer as a generous act while others will perceive this offer as an act of corruption.

For one to know where to draw the line when it comes to such offers, there is a criterion that has to be met for it to amount to corruption. It is important that one makes consideration on whether the action was meant to influence the person to whom the offer is being made to. Secondly, that action should compel the officer to use his power to benefit himself or as a way of returning the favor.

It will only be corruption when one uses their position carelessly to favor some people or to get their way through.
