Extract of sample "Reconstruction in America"

Through the government of President Andrew Johnson, slavery was abolished giving room to perceived freedom for all the African-Americans. This, however, lasted for a short time (Divine, 1998). The congress passed the amendments that guaranteed equal benefits and opportunities to all people in America, an action that was rejected by the southern states. These made it difficult to pursue freedom for Africans in America. The congress embarked on a very radical way of protecting the Africans by giving them the right to vote.

This, however, was a disadvantage to the Africans because this law assumed that once these people were given the freedom to vote, they could contend for their rights. This was impossible with the kind of pressure the rich Americans were putting on them (Divine, 1998). The Supreme Court was involved in sentencing the black Americans for no well-defined reasons. This method was targeted to intimidate their quest for justice and rights. In the end, reconstruction was not achieved (Divine, 1998).

Reconstruction was not achieved because of the struggle that existed between the federal government, the Congress and the Supreme Court. These did not collaborate to achieve their goal to reconstruct.
