Travers And Newton-Francis Articles Max Travers and Michelle Newton-Francis are the of sociology at the of Tasmania and the American University of Washington District of Columbia respectively. They both have written the articles on the subject of criminal justice research. The criminal justice is the subject of law which focuses upon the criminal actions, behavior and the judgments regarding criminal activities. The explanation style of both articles has many contrasting features. The objectives behind both articles are same but are elucidated in the different style.

Both articles have also varied in the length. The present paper illustrates the comparative study of the Travers and Newton-Francis articles. The Travers (2008) wrote a comparative article “Understanding Comparison in Criminal Justice Research” to elaborate the phenomenon, how comparative research is conducted in the criminal justice. In contrast, Newton (2009) wrote the article on “Criminal Justice Research and Practice: Diverse Voices from the Field” which was a review of the book of Miller’s collection edited by Susan L.

Miller (2007). This article guides the students of sociology or criminal justice about their subject goal.The article size of Travers (2008) has an extended length and followed the methodology of sections and sub sections to explaining each idea in detail. The first section “Positivist and Interpretive Understandings of Comparison” of Travers’ article (2008) described philosophies of Positivism and interpretive methods for comprehending the comparison techniques, explanations, addressing and the challenges faced by interpretivists in criminal justice research.

In the second section “Using Qualitative Methods to Explain Statistical Variation” Travers (2008) explained the method of using qualitative technique toward describing the quantitative facts in the criminal courts. This section also covered the problems and their solutions possibilities regarding such method. Section three “Taking Interpretivism Further: An Australian Case Study” demonstrated other interpretive practices of comparison using example of an Australian ethnographic case study and the examination methodology used by professionals.

Final section “Conclusion: Toward a Different Understanding of Comparison” Travers (2008) concluded overall results which was drew from this article. On the contrary, the article size of Newton (2009) is precise, does not follow methodology of sub sections but explained the three parts of essay as carried in the Miller’s collection (2007) in different paragraphs. The first body paragraph of Newton (2009) reviewed part one of the book “Ways to inquire: Research Method” which elaborated ways of investigation in criminal justice research.

The second paragraph explained part two of the book “inquirers: Professionals, Activists, and Researchers” that illustrated the experiences of the professionals in the field of criminal justice. In the last body paragraph Newton (2009) reviewed part three of the book “Sites of inquiry” described examination of gender based interesting cases.The findings of the Travers (2008) gave a broad scope of criminal justice research. It illustrated, how to make decisions in different legal cultures, what methodology has to be used to address in a legal matters and how to use understanding of comparison in the criminal justice research.

On the other side findings of the Newton (2009) were only related to the Millers collection. Newton (2009) found that Millers’ collection was the most comprehensive collection which helped the students and new practitioners of criminal justice towards conducting the research and strengthen their careers.The comparative of study of Travers (2008) and Newton (2009) articles conclude that even though both writers chose same subject of writing but have explained the criteria in contrasting style with the different lengths of the articles.
