Mass Communication for Internal and External Audiences Mass Communication for Internal and External Audiences Executive Summary Thisreport discusses about mass communication for internal and external sources and a personal evaluation based on the emotional intelligence instrument. The personal analysis involved grading on a number of personal and professional characteristics and then calculating the average score for each section. These calculations and the assessment chart can be found in the paper. The analysis of the assessment tool helped to reveal various strengths and weaknesses of one’s personality which are further discusses in the paper. The paper also brings forward literature research based on the external and internal communication of an organization and the relation of mass communication with emotional intelligence. The paper proved to be a resourceful way of gaining an insight on the personality of an individual and how that individual can work and set targets in order to overcome his weak points. Introduction Mass communication deals with the conveyance of messages through various resources to a larger audience. Mass communication is mostly related to various print and media sources such as newspaper, television, movies etc. Mass communication also deals with how this content that is being transmitted affects the behavior of the audience and how the general public perceives this information (Pearson ,2009). Communication generally involves sending of message through a medium which is then received by the receiver. The message is established with the help of mutual understanding between the sender and the receiver. Internal and external communications are the two different channels which are usually involved with public relations. The communication that takes place between the management of an organization and its employees is termed as internal organization whereas communication that takes place between the organization and any resource outside this organization is termed as external communication. A balance between both of these communications results in the progress of the organization and its employees (Clear & Weideman, 2002). Emotional intelligence is the utilization of the intrapersonal emotions in order to progress and learn something about you. In order to succeed in mass communication one must be aware of his/her level of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence also points towards the areas which can be improved and indicates the strength and weakness in one’s personality (Esmond-Kiger, Tucker & Yost, 2015). Content a) Prioritized Skill List Score Capability Area 3.58 Ethos/Image 3.20 Audience Analysis and Strategy 4.00 Social Media and Other Written Communication 3.72 Oral Communication 3.67 Visual Communication 3.71 Dealing with Own Feelings 3.70 Dealing with Others 3.71 Cultural Communication Competence 3.50 Group and Team Communication and Dynamics 3.40 Organizational Communication 3.55 Internal Communication 3.50 External Communication 1 = Need to develop, essentially need a lot of work on this capability 2 = Need some work on this capability 3 = Acceptable, but could be stronger 4 = Very good abilities, close to leadership communication level 5 = Excellent abilities, leadership communication level achieved b) Strengths Discussions Organizing a presentation and delivering it to small groups of people is what I do best. Small groups of people are easy to handle and my ability to accurately answer questions asked by the audience helps me to convey a better understanding of the presentation to the concerned audience. Another strength that I possess which is relevant to my communication skills is that I rarely tend to dwell onto other subjects while giving presentations, this helps me to give concise and effective presentations that are time managed well and do not bore the audience due to the longer duration of time. I am also good at preparing good presentation which contain eye catching graphics and presenting graphically which is considered the best way to present the data and ensure a better understanding of what the presentation is all about. These skills were greatly beneficial for me during my academic as well as professional career as due to this reason I was prioritized among those to give presentation on various topics to a small group of audience such my class or colleagues. My presentations were effective and my peers always praised my presentation skills very much. c) Weakness Discussions Some of the negatives that I possess in the field of communication is the lack of confidence that I possess while addressing a larger group of people. I am also bad at giving presentations that have short deadline and have to be delivered in the earliest possible time. The lack of confidence to address a larger audience has always made me hesitate to present in such circumstances and hence this creates a negative image in cases when larger groups of people need to be addressed. Although my peers have encouraged me to conquer this weakness but the hesitation does not allow me to try. My weakness hence serves as an opportunity for my competitors to leave me behind professionally. d) Goals, Programs, and Targets Goal1: To develop skills to with regards to commenting on my style Program 1: To learn the best way through which the audience or colleagues can learn to comment on my style and to learn from that Target 1: By the end of this month, I will assess all the comments made on my style, I will keep the positive comments and try to work on the negative aspects of my style. Goal2: To assess my personality and identify the negative and positive aspects and to work on its improvement Program 2: Encourage people to comment about my positive and negative aspects of personality, do a self-assessment. Target 2: Whatever assessment is conducted within one weeks’ time will be analyzed by me; I will observe my strengths and weaknesses and try to improve the negative points of my personality. Goal 3: To explore the people’s aspect of the problem when working in teams Program 3: Keeping an open ear and eye towards the problems that my team members are going through while performing different tasks and to listen to their opinions on how to reduce the difficulty being caused. Target 3: By the end of two months, I will successfully be able to reduce all the problems that the people have. e) Summary goals, programs, and targets table: GOAL PROGRAM TARGET ACHIEVED? (Y/N) 1) Comment on style 1) learn the best way through which the audience or colleagues can learn to comment on my style and to learn from that 1) By the end of one month, Keep the positive comments and try to work on the negative aspects of my style. Y 2) positive and negative aspects of personality 2) Encourage people to comment about my positive and negative aspects of personality Do a self-assessment. 2) By the end of this week, observe my strengths and weaknesses. These assessments can then help us to set our goals and targets which can both be of short term and long terms durations. The emotional intelligence tool is a great ways to point out the weak areas and also to specify those areas which can be improved by true dedication and commitment. A person should be well acknowledged about his current status and this understanding will help an individual to progress towards a better personal and professional life. References Pearce, K. (2009).
