People perceive things differently depending on what they selectively perceive and how the interpret and organize things perceived. The process of how individual receive stimuli from the surrounding environment happens through the five senses: smell, taste, sight, hearing and touch. The perceptual process may, however, result in mistake or errors. Some of the common perceptual mistakes that people make are stereotyping, the halo effect and perceptual defense (Berlin & Leonard, pp, 865). In my case, I find myself having a gender stereotyping mistakes.

I tend to assign attributes to someone on the basis of the gender orientation. The reason as to why I have gender stereotyping is because we are taught, and many of us have been grown up firmly knowing that men and women play different roles in the society. For example, I have always had this feeling that women would more inclined to jobs relating to household such as cooking, child rearing and washing the ditches and the man, on the other side involved in making money (Strawson, pp 4). Besides, there are certain jobs that have always looked suitable for women such as a job in the social care and nurses.

Similarly, the male cohort would fit well in managerial roles. I realized the issue of having gender stereotyping from the ongoing campaign to empower women. They have for long been perceived unable to do successfully the ‘men jobs’, but they have proved many wrong with some even rising to the highest job in states such as President and Deputy President. From the time I started becoming conscious of gender stereotyping, I have made a practice of not judging a person based on the gender as they have potential beyond their gender orientation.
