Co-culture The co-culture that I belong to is the African American culture. The US has become an increasingly multicultural country over the decades. Every day, I have to socialize with people coming from all the different sorts of races, ethnicities, and countries. African Americans have a unique accent for speaking English. They are more straight-forward and informal in their speech compared to other subcultural communities in the US. These qualities in speech help us convey more to others in lesser time and make the conversation meaningful. The informal style helps us speak from our comfort zone so that we don’t have to look for difficult words in order to express ourselves better. Our focus in speech is more on the content than presentation. Some communities, particularly the new immigrants, sometimes find us outspoken for the very reasons. But I have noticed that as time goes by, they become not only used to this style of talking but also start liking it for its straight-forwardness and meaningfulness. Speech and dialect differences between the African Americans and other subcultural communities in the US become more evident in the social and public situations than in the formal situations. While we know complete English with excellent grammar and sentence structuring, we like to talk using more nouns and adjectives than pronouns and linking verbs even if the grammar is compromised in that. Having heard my family members talk like that as I grew up, I can identify with this style of talking and it has become part of our identity in the society that we are proud of. Read More
