Introduction Breastfeeding in public is a sensitive topic for some. Many are offended when a woman is nursing her toddler in a public place, such as the park or at an airport. There have been many incidents at restaurants and retail stores where nursing mothers were asked to stop breastfeeding or were asked to leave because it was “distracting”or was considered “indecent” for the public eye. Many were told to move to the bathroom, the most unsanitary place for a baby to be feeding.While some discourage public breastfeeding, doctors encourage mothers to nurse as much as possible.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 76 percent of mothers start breastfeeding immediately after birth, but only about 16 percent of those moms are breastfeeding exclusively six months later. As a part of the Healthy People 2020 initiative, the national goal is to increase the proportion of mothers who breastfeed their babies in the early postpartum period to 81.9 percent by the year 2020. Doctors and the American Academy of Pediatrics support breastfeeding so much due to the benefits for the baby and the mother.

South Korea for instance has nursing stations at almost all of the major subway/train stations, airports, workplaces, theme parks, museums, department stores, and even restaurants. Nursing stations in South Korea are as common as the restrooms. This image below is an example of a nursing room at Gyeongbok Palace, a tourist site, in South Korea. In the Philippines, the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009, also known as Republic Act 10028, was signed into a law. It required all establishments or institutions to have lactation stations, or nursing stations, which would provide privacy to mothers who need to, feed their babies while they are out.

Since then, nursing stations have been set up in malls, airports, workplaces, supermarkets, restaurants, and even bus stations.These are only some of many more reasons mothers should be breastfeeding their newborn. However, even with this much confidence in breastfeeding, the American public is still hesitant to accept open nursing. Arizona is part of the Forty-six states that have laws that specifically allow women to breastfeed in any public or private location. It is also part of the twenty-nine states that exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws.

However, this is not enough for nursing mothers in Arizona to breastfeed comfortably. There are not enough places even in Maricopa County, AZ for a mother to nurse her toddler at ease. Thesis StatementThe purpose of this report if to recommend the most suitable nursing stations to different types of settings in Maricopa County. The criteria are:SizeLocationPrivacyAccessibilityMaintainabilitySecuritySizeMust be large enough to fit a mother and her toddler (about 4’ by 5’).LocationMothers’ rooms should be located in a safe area. They should not be located in areas that would not be suitable for the preparation and storage of food. PrivacyThe room should have a user-operated deadbolt for privacy. The best locks are indicator deadbolts that display an “occupied” message to discourage interruptions. AccessibilityDepending on where the room is located, it should have clear times of operation and must be easy to get to.

MaintainabilityThe room must be simple to keep clean and organized as most of the time it will be the user’s responsibility to clean up after her session.ConvenienceRoom must have the appliances and accessories necessary for comfort and care.EvaluationThe criteria listed above will be used to evaluate different nursing stations to show that each one is suitable for each different setting in Maricopa County, AZ.Phoenix Sky Harbor International AirportMany families like to fly to different destinations for vacation and most of the time airports do not have separate nursing stations with their crowded bathrooms, restaurants, and gates.

The Mamava is a free-standing pod that offers nursing mothers a safe, clean, functional, and stylishly designed space to pump/nurse while away from home.SizeThis specific nursing station is 4 ft. x 8 ft. 3 in. x 7 ft. 6 in. There is enough room inside for four nursing mothers to breastfeed their babies and be comfortable.LocationThis pod can be placed anywhere the aviation director of Sky Harbor feels would be most convenient for nursing mothers. It is small enough to against any wall or replace an old atm machine and can easily be maneuvered.

You can see in this image on the right that it is small and can be placed almost anywhere in the airport.PrivacyThis small pod has a door that can easily be locked from the inside and has a sign hanging on the door whenever it is being used.AccessibilitySince the airport does not technically close, the Mamava nursing station can be used at any time of the day. The airport would then need to put up signs leading nursing mothers to the Mamava just as it does for baggage claim and for gates.MaintainabilityThe Mamava comes with cleaning supplies so it will be easy for the mother to keep the pod clean as well as herself and the baby.

ConvenienceThis nursing pod comes with dual seating for the mother’s comfort preference and room for child or companion, fold down table to comfortably situate a breast pump, power outlet for breast pump if needed, has space for luggage and/or stroller, soft lighting, fixture with mirror and clean-up supplies, and an occupied lock. Arizona State University: Tempe Campus Children’s CenterThe ASU Tempe campus’ Campus Children’s Center (CCC) enrolls children, aged one to five years old, of ASU students, faculty and staff.

It offers mainly full-time child care with some part-time options. Since it is a daycare with no parents around and only accepts children starting at age one, so there is no nursing station there. SizeSince CCC is a daycare, it is spacious for the children to run around and play. There should also be extra storage rooms that can be converted into safe nursing rooms.LocationCCC is located right on the ASU Tempe campus making it easy to locate and safe to be around. Mothers will not have to worry about safety since it is on campus and there is constant traffic in that area.

PrivacyThe employees of CCC will understand how to handle nursing mothers since they work with toddlers and young children and know how hard it can be. AccessibilityThe CCC is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The room should be available at these hours. MaintainabilityThe employees of the CCC will maintain and clean the room making sure it’s safe for the baby and the mother before it opens. However, it will be the nursing mothers’ duty to clean and keep the room tidy after she is done utilizing it.

ConvenienceSince CCC already takes care of children, it should already have some supplies such as diapers, wipes, snacks, and other materials useful to nursing mothers.Conclusion and Recommendations:Additional Comments:Paper needs proper APA style of formatting.There should be in-text citations along with the reference sources, so that literature review can be supported with the help of research. In my views, body section does not support the basic purpose of the report. The main problem is the restrictions on public breastfeeding.

However, the body gives examples of two ideal nursing rooms, so we may contradict with the problem statement.
