Title Name Institution Course Lecturer Date Number of words: 1,503. Topic: Case Study. Green Computing has with time become a big issue globally having the aim of reducing environmental decay that is as a result of abuse of the environment and the rising threat of global warming. According to what Kiruthiga and Kumar (2013) states, green computing represents an environmental responsible way to reduce environmental electronic waste as well as power. Green computing is said to be the practice of using computing resources efficiently. Western India Products Limited (Wipro) is a multinational IT Consulting and System Integration services company that has its headquarters situated in India. The report stated that the ICT sector can work to reduce global emissions by around 15%in 2020 and this is through energy efficiency. Wipro has come about with various green initiatives such as the Eco-eye. With the Indian IT sector surfacing in the sixties, this was a hostile environment due to the government being rigid with policies and concerns like infrastructure, death of the skilled people who were resources to the countries. In the eighties the country was boosted because of reforms like liberation in the IT sector and there was recognition of software sector and there emerged new computer policies. In the 2000s, the government initiated IT sector as a good upcoming sector for India’s economy and set up Software Technology Parks, Information Technology and the Special Economic Zones. India is now estimated to have 243million internet users by June 2014 according to Mworani (2013). With all this development in the IT sector growing at a brisk pace, there are equally alarming ecological concerns and this produces Green House Gasses emissions, Electronic waste and Ozone depleting Substances created in the process of recycling process. The government was taking optimistic measures to protect Mother Nature and this was done by raising awareness and by coming up with ecofriendly legislations. In 2007 to 2008 Wipro as mentioned to be one of the biggest IT companies launched initiatives and decided to report their sustainability on the Global Reporting Initiative framework. The initiative was based on environment emphasizing the principles of UN global compact. Due to the challenge of unfriendly emissions from recycling, Wipro came up with an electronic disposal programme for its customers. It collected discarded programmes from customers and sent them to venders certified by the pollution Control board to dispose the parts. This initiative that is dubbed as the Green Computing enabled end to end electronic waste management and hence reduced the pollution. Wipro extended to physical infrastructure and built houses that are ecofriendly. The buildings used rainwater; treated waste water used renewable energy like solar and biomass as it is written by Unru and Ettenson (2010), Wipro is also engaged in ecofriendly desktops n laptops. This aims at reducing electronic waste in the environment. The products named Green Ware were complaints with the European government. The new PCs produced would be free from dangerous materials such as the brominated frame retardants, cadmium, polyvinyl Chloride and mercury. Wipro got engaged in Eco eye project which is a programme for increasing ecological sustainability in all its operations and engaging of its stakeholders. The challenges that Wipro encountered were, financial problems. This was mainly in the changing from the non-green products and environment which the people were used to a green environment. The change of the products required a large amount of money. Because people, environment and business are all interrelated and they interact, there is ecological imbalance, social inequity and economic disparity, Wipro realized that sustainability involves balancing without compromising. As in WIPRO 2012, the ability to convince people that businesses have to rapidly be redesigned in terms of the value, chains to reduce consumption and dependence on constrained resources such as use of energy in efficient measures increase efficiency. This includes the desktop power management, printer management, data center virtualization and encouraging teleconferencing and internet enabled meetings. Through all this projects, Wipro has been of importance because it there are abundant of vegetation all round and on the land to provide ample places for shade purposes and dust elimination. Wipro (2008). This has caused the government to trust them and hive them certification for more buildings. There has been a challenge such that although a large number of people know that there are potential benefits in going green, it is ironical that there has not been high demand for the same. The current economic crisis has made it hard for the organizations to go green because they are going for the cheap and short term measures and solutions hence green solutions are not gaining footage. Lessons that can be learnt by other organizations are: first is working with all the people who are stake holders in the organization. This is working in collaboration with employees, customers and suppliers. Having leadership from the top is another lesson to be learnt. The CEO made it his personal mandate to drive change and the other follow. Being closely involved with initiatives being run by the organization and looking at the business or organization from all perspectives from the human resource, to the finance office and having a governing council in place as well to pass policies and to sign off the decisions being made. Involving other people and companies interested in the same field of business and sharing ideas ids of great benefit. Wipro involved the government and due to this there has been absence of growth and provision of eco-friendly facilities which are useful and secure o the people hence preserving Mother Nature. Opportunities are found in the green technology like never before and organizations are seeing it is seen as a way that it is meant to create profit centers while trying to help the environmental cause. Lakshmi (2012) says that the plan that is there towards green IT is supposed to compose of the new electronic products and services that have good efficiency and all possible options that are done to be towards energy savings. Faster processors from ages ago use more power. The waste heat causes reliability problems, as CU's crash more often at higher temperatures. Many people have been working for long to slice this inefficiency out of computers. Similarly, as in International Journal of Grid and Distributed Computing (2009), power supplies are notoriously bad, generally as little as 47% efficient. More advantages is that the experts that are in the industry feel that there is a lack of strategies to offer education to the educate market on the importance of green computing for the benefit of the environment and its ability to reduce e-waste. Providers of computing desktop virtualization software have found takers in India. The software is simple, each user’s monitor, keyboard and mouse is connected to the shared PC through a small computing access device. The access device itself has no CPU, memory, or moving parts making it cheap to produce and hence make more benefits. Another essential benefit of going green is the provision of energy and water making it resource efficient. It has brought about climate change too. Pollution and waste has resulted to zero discharge of untreated waste. Essentially, green computing allows individuals or companies to reduce their need for big, bulky, energy consuming servers by relocating them on the Internet. It may also be used in areas like networking, data storage, software applications, and operating systems, again, potentially reducing the need for hardware. There are many other techniques at the personal computer level. For instance, the management of power is an easy and effective means of green saving while considering conservation of energy. While many of the systems that do operating come with power-saving settings, there are a variety of products that are made in such a way that they can monitor and adjust levels of energy so as to increase performance and reduce energy wasted as indicated by Kiruthiga and Kumar (2014). The role of IT vendors has been enhanced in the development and marketing of green technology .These vendors make a point of telling buyers that they have the products. Some vendors have programs that have been developed to train and certify partners on green technology and services. For instance, Suns Eco Advantage Program, trains channel partners and individuals on the usage of the machines. Individually, some vendors work on green training and certification programs for their partners. They also need to gather together and work with a third party, such as the association that deals with trade Computing The Standards of the technology development as in Swati, Garg and Kumar (2009) should be in a way that in so as to put into implementation the employee and the corporate policies that show their seriousness about the environment. Policies pit in place should offer powering down idle devices, cover printing, lighting use and, appropriate public transportation subsidies and telecommuting. In addition, more vendors should take a tip from Google and consider investing in alternative sources of energy so as to show the world their serious about going green. Considering the above two arguments, I recommend that the use of the green computing be given to the venders so as the individuals could acquire them from the venders and in the process they will be given instruction and advised pertaining the machine use and the benefits also as the customers may enjoy a good deal of benefits.
