The purpose of storing an index is to optimize speed and performance in finding relevant documents for a search query. This, however, was not depicted clearly in Lycos. Meta Tag Indexing Specific documents in all search engines often contain embedded Meta information such as author, keywords, description, and language. For HTML pages, the Meta tag contains keywords which are also included in the index. CHALLENGES 1. Some features and functionality may not be available in regions and countries in Africa and other underdeveloped countries when it comes to services like Bing Travel and Events. 2. Relevance of searches on little known subjects or terms in Bing and Lycos is not up to standard. This is especially in comparison with the well-established Google which gives much more relevant results in response to less popular topics. 3. A user in a country in Africa cannot refine his or her search based on their location in Bing and Lycos. The highest refinement one can work with is ‘International’ level. 4. Bing and Lycos are slower in indexing web pages than Google. 5. Users in countries like China and India are subjected to censorship of adult content based on the government policies and laws that Bing has to conform to. This is a violation of freedom to information. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Bing and Lycos should be developed to allow specific search services based on locations away from the developed world. 2. Bingbot should crawl around diverse websites in order to include even the little known subjects. 3. Bing and Lycos should expand their content coverage to refine searches in all parts of the world, no matter the remoteness. 4. Bing and Lycos should step up their indexing techniques to make it quicker. CONCLUSION While neither Google nor Lycos can credit their success solely on their somewhat weird sounding names, a search engine needs a clear brand. And for the first time, Microsoft may have found one with Bing. By combining the new brand with new features, a focus on continued improvement, and a new advertising campaign, Bing is finally beginning to offer a more compelling reason to use a Microsoft search engine thus increasing the market share. In the web 2.0 ages, Google provides every imaginable service online today; from Gmail to Google+ to ensure that the surfer gets the most from the web.
