Yongji Shen ENG 1A 8/27 Vallee Introduction Career Profile - Computer Programmer Who in the modern world would survive without knowledge of a computer and its applications? Adams observes that as the world advances into more digital engagements, courses such as computer science, programming and software engineering would be lucrative in the near future. Rapid advances in industrialization have expanded the need of computer knowledge. Besides, more businesses rely on computers and its applications to ensure efficiency in their operations. In essence, computer programmers code programs that guide the computer on what to do. It entails converting software developed by software engineers into instructions readable by a computer. Additionally, it involves creating, adapting, troubleshooting, modifying as well as maintaining programs. In order for one to become a computer programmer, a bachelor’s degree is required. At advanced levels, a master’s degree is essential. However, those with a significant work experience may need an associate’s degree or a certificate. In particular work stations, on going training is offered. At the end a certificate is awarded, just to ensure one is at par with current technology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics of 2013, a computer programmer earns approximately $74,280 annually (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Moreover, it predicts that job opportunities for programmers were to increase by eight percent between the years 2012-2022 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). However, computer programming has also diversified. For instance, computer programmers now assist software engineers to identify user needs and to design programs. Nonetheless, the demand for programmers is highest for those with good technical skills as well as a solid grasp of programming needs of a business entity. Of note is the rapidly dynamic nature of computer technology. Therefore, programmers are advised to constantly build on their expertise. Specialized training would open doors for one to become a software engineer, project manager, information systems manager or systems consultant. Currently, services industry in the US has the highest demand of computer programmers attributed to a surge in demand ( U.S. News & World Report). When I thought of who I would interview about computer programming, Matt came to mind. Matt is a senior system operation manager at Dixie Electric Company (DEMC0). He has been a computer programmer for 25 years since his graduation from Massachusetts University of Technology. He stood five feet tall, charming and very jovial. I initially met him during graduation party of one of my friends, where he was the main speaker. He gave a keynote address that forever ringed in me. How could I forget him? On this particular day, I meet him in his office. ‘Hello, Shen! It’s been a while. How are you fairing on?” He said as he welcomed me into his spacious office. It looked quite expensive, I must say. Gold linings donned the walls, with hanging frames of awards of his exemplary performance. “He must be living well,” I said to myself. After exchanging pleasantries, we delved into the subject matter. He acknowledged that his interest in computers began way back during his days in high school. During his senior year in high school, he decided to pursue computer programming as a career. He notes that most employers look for programmers who have had at least four year training in programming. He reaches out to two files of applicants that sought an opportunity at the firm. “These are potential candidates who may have their application considered, “he interjects as he hands me the files to have a quick look. Matt is a strict person and a perfectionist. He always means what he says. What was his motivation in computers? “I have always had a special interest in mathematics and computers. Besides, I like using logic to solve problems. Computers offered me that chance. Therefore, my interest in computer programming was inevitable. He seemed contented. His demeanor could tell it all. Resting on an armchair, slightly leaning on the back, he smiles as if thinking “If it were not computers, what else would I have done?” He notes that there has been a demand for people with a background in computer science. Furthermore, the salary range is relatively good. “Averagely, one would earn between 50,000 dollars to 150,000 dollars annually depending on where one works and the nature of the employment,” he says. He reaches out to his pay slip and hands it to me. Well, I would say he is living his life. Ordinary citizens would not easily earn such an amount. He opines that aside from the basic requirements in programming, one does not need to have special requirements. “However, if one has a logical approach at solving issues and excellent organization skills, one can easily be a successful computer programmer,” he concludes. P5roudly, he brags to be an important asset to the company as he is a senior information manager. He supports the company’s web assets as imports are channeled through the company’s internet site as well as e-commerce site. A lucky man I must say he is. He hands me his business card as we finish up the interview. “Come back another time. I might just make a programmer out of you,” he chides as a phone rings. I visit where one computer programmer’s work station to have a feel of what it is like. Well, one would think, they work in a nice office complete with lingerie, nice furniture and decorations. Mike Harvey is a complete contrast to what one would expect. He operates from his cubicle. From the onset, one would feel the absence of paper work. No notebooks, no pens, no files and no papers. I do not see any manuals or reference books. However, at the end of the room lies a desktop computer, a laptop and assortment of external hard drives. I notice snack boxes and ice cream can strewn all over the place. Perhaps a feel of how intensive the work is. You could easily forgo lunch. In summary, computer programming is an intriguing field to those with an interest in it. It is rewarding too! Not only financially but also job satisfaction. However, one got to be a logical problem solver as well as good organizational skills. It may not be for everyone. Works Cited U.S. News & World Report.
