Computer Sciences and Information Technology Computer Science is a branch of science that deals with the mathematical and scientific approach in computing and information technology. Computer science is divided into subfields to ensure that its implementation and use in computer systems is practical. The subfields include computational complex theory, computer graphics, programming language theory, computer programming among others. Students of computer Science and information technology can pursue a career in different field depending on their career objectives, interests and ambitions and the level of performance in a particular area of specialization. The paper will explore my career objective, learning style, my team role, personal attributes and abilities as a mathematician in computer science and information technology. Career objectives My career objective is to work for a reputable organization as top-level management in the fields of finance, management, public service or actuarial management where I would be able to use my mathematical and analytical skills to solve mathematical problems related to computer science. I will also be able to use my outgoing personality, enthusiasms, positive attitude, and will to work as a team to enhance the performance of the organization. Honey and Mumford Learning Style Learning style preference is a factor that dictates the things that students learn and the ease with which they are learnt. This is because they have the potential of exerting powerful manipulation on the learning effectiveness. For this reasons, Honey and Mumford formulated a four learning style questionnaires that learners may prefer to adopt and a preferred learning methodology. These include the activist, reflectors, theorist, and pragmatism learning styles. I being interested in mathematics that requires deep analytical and complex computations and my preference of working as a team, I prefer the pragmatic learning style. This is because it allows me to ask questions on the spot from my lecturers who are experts in the field of mathematics. Pragmatic learning style enables discussion with my colleagues easy as one who is more knowledgeable in a particular area is given a chance to demonstrate to others the problem instead of struggling as an individual making trial and error as is the case with activist style (Pont 87) Learning Power (ELLI) Leaning power refers to the skills and psychological traits that enable learners to engage effectively in diverse learning challenges. In this regard I believe that I posses different learning traits and powers that has seen me improve and get good marks in mathematics. My first learning power is critical curiosity. This is because I am a person who likes to find out things and get down to the bottom of the matter especially when doing my studies. This is manifested in the fact that I like asking questions and is always willing to share out with my fellow classmates. I also believe that my good performance in mathematics is a product of my inquiry (Hughes 118). I also pose a learning relationship power. I like sharing ideas with my fellows that enable me learn from them as they also learn from me since I believe that I cannot be at a position to know everything. It is therefore through group work that we can learn from each other. Group work has helped me a lot in knowing many things that I could not have known if I could have resorted to independent studies without engaging my colleagues (Hughes 119). I am also a very creative person and like to meet challenges and take risk. My creativity helps me in analyzing a problem from different perspectives to be able to come with the solution to the problem. Creativity has enabled me develop skill in mathematics that has seen my performance improve greatly looking at my past performance. Mathematics sometimes has complex calculation and analysis to be able to solve. In this regard, creative imagination is required to solve such complex computations (Hughes 118). Team Role (Belbin) Team role is a means of determining who does what for effective groupings and team functioning. Belbin team role is a personality test meant to determine how a person behaves in a team in which he identified nine team roles namely, plant, Resource investigator, co-coordinator, team worker, implementer, specialist, sharper, monitor evaluator, and completer finisher. Belbin argues that an individual may perform in one way or the other a number of these roles in a team depending on preference, ability, and skills. Concerning the group exercise, so far I have participated in my team as a sharper and a team worker. As a sharper, I have ensured that the group peruses objectives of the study encouraging every individual that makes up a group to be more focus. This is because I do not believe on failure and all my energy and skills are utilized in the group to ensure that the set objectives are achieved and there is no room for failure. I do take part in arguing out what I feel is beneficial to the group and offer challenge to the group when necessary. At some instances, I participate as a team worker. This is because I am a good listener and is able to calm down the group in case of a disagreement within the group. This has helped in bringing together the group so that they can understand one another to be able to achieve a common goal. This has seen my group working well due to the role I have played as a team worker. Self MAP (Motivation, Ability, and Personality) Self-map encompasses a number of motivational traits that I consider helpful in my studies. The motivational traits have had impact on my personality and level of performance in mathematics. The motivational traits are as outlined bellow and how they have shaped my personality (Kumar 81). Communication of ideas through group discussions Through communication of ideas, I have been able to keep focus at all times. I have been able to understand the meaning and purpose of human beings. This has made me develop a calling to make positive impacts on the lives of others. This is because through group discussions I have been able to understand that communication of ideas is the best way of achieving these goals. Communication of ideas have also enabled me improve in mathematics as can be shown from my past results and still believe that through communication of ideas we will be able to uplift those who are weak so that they can also be able to get good grades and prosper in their career paths (Kumar 84). Scientific motivational trait I am motivated by scientific thing that requires a lot of curiosity, exploration, questioning, experimentation, and evaluation. Kumar (88) observed that the world of mathematics and science entails theoretical and practical mathematical application and scientific processes that are applicable in a wide variety of careers. Actuarial science and finance as examples just to mention a few. I am also motivated by pursuing the career in mathematics and computer science because the demand for skilled personnel is very high in the world. Abilities and Aptitudes Being that I am good at mathematics, I believe that I have the ability, and aptitude to develop thorough and brilliant-analytical skills as required in mathematics and computer science. My performance in mathematics I do believe reflects this fact. My performance in mathematics also reflects that I am a very confident, precocious, competitive, and is one who is obsessed with quality and talent. This qualities and aptitudes has enabled be to be able to solve very complex mathematical computations in my course. Things I am good at and those that are difficult From my past performance, I have come to understand that I am good at mathematical parts of the course. The mathematical aspects that I fare well in include the areas of quantity, space, and structure in a computer system. I am also good at computational mathematics and applied mathematics. However, I find some difficulties with areas that deal with pure theory, especially on areas dealing with computer language theory. Personality type based on the MBTI tool MBTI is a personality test based on individual preference. Myers and Briggs argue that peoples behaviors are orderly and consistent due to basic variations in the manner in which individuals prefer to utilize their perception and judgment. My personality traits I believe can also be determined by the use of Myers and Briggs indicator (Barnet 220). My personality based on MBTI (Extraversion and introversion) Extroversion and introversion indicators seek understand an individual’s personality based on preference of focus, whether the individual’s focus is on the outer world or on the inner world. In this regard, I believe I am an extravert since I normally spend time on the outer world of people by engaging in discussion and exchanging ideas. I also feel comfortable working in groups and is seen as an outgoing person (Barnet 220) My personality based on MBTI (Sensing and Intuition) This personality indicator is based on hoe an individual receive information. This is on whether an individual pays attention to information from his own thinking or from possibilities and pattern of message received (Barnet 220). In this regard, I believe I am a sensing person. The reason being, I solve problems by working through truth for me to be able to understand the problems. I am also a pragmatic individual, who likes working with figure in mathematics. My personality based on MBTI (Thinking or Feeling) This personality indicator is based on individual’s decision-making preference. This is on whether an individual prefers looking at logics and consistency before making decision or looks at the people first and extraordinary situation before arriving at a conclusion (Barnet 220). In this regard, I am a thinker. This is because I enjoy technical and mathematical fields where logic reigns. I also like looking at logical solutions and explanations to what I do. In conclusion, from the discussions above, one would be able to understand my carrier objective, the learning styles preferable for me, and my team role. The discussion also brought out self-mapping through motivational straits and the things that I am good in and those that brings difficulty.
