Wireless Technologies Proposal Inserts Inserts his/her The term wireless technology is used to de any network connection that is free from wires. Technically, it uses radio frequency waves to establish connection between devices (Firestone, 2008). There are several kinds of wireless networks, the most common of which are the 3G, Wi-Fi, and 4G technologies (Dubendorf, 2003). Generally, wireless technologies fall under the categories of Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), and Personal Area Network (PAN).
For Party Plates the two wireless technologies that are highly recommended by our team are the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. As far as Wi-Fi is concerned, its standards have been established by the IEEE 802.11 (Dubendorf, 2003). This technology has gained much popularity so much so that others such as Bluetooth, IrDA and HomeRF have been deemed obsolete in most cases (Davis, 2004). Wi-Fi offers coverage of up to 50 meters and offers a speed of 7Mbps which is nearly 10 times that of Bluetooth (Dubendorf, 2003). In your company the presence of Wi-Fi would mean that there is no need to purchase equipment for connection of access points, thus saving capital costs. It has been proven that Wi-Fi offers businesses the advantages of enhanced efficiency due to speedier transfer of information between stakeholders, enhanced coverage due to on-the-move connectivity, flexibility in terms of working from home due to wireless links with the business’s database, as well as new product opportunities due to ‘hot spot’ networking (Davis, 2004). However, as is the case with most technologies, Wi-Fi is also accompanied by its drawbacks. For instance, it is highly susceptible to security attacks by unauthorized users. There may also be issues with installation such as the interference caused by other users of radio signals within the same facility (Firestone, 2008). There may also be certain areas called ‘black spots’ where Wi-Fi offers no connectivity, hence, it is difficult to have consistent signals (Davis, 2004). Finally, your company may also have to bear in mind that Wi-Fi offers a speed lower than that of networks that are wired; hence, the ‘main’ system ought to be wired rather than wireless (Davis, 2004).
As far as Bluetooth is concerned, it can be used by Party Plates to allow seamless connection of Bluetooth enabled devices including printers, scanners, cell phones, headsets, computers and keyboards within a range of 10 meters (Dubendorf, 2003). The most obvious advantage of this would be the freeing up of floor space as cables will be eliminated. Furthermore, Bluetooth activated devices can share information and synchronize data transfer amongst themselves. At a higher level, Bluetooth can be used to wirelessly control machinery and equipment (Davis, 2004). For employees, Bluetooth enabled ‘badges’ can enable them to check in automatically in the premises (Muller, 2003). However, it must be recognized that although Bluetooth is highly secure, it offers slow data speeds. Furthermore, it offers connectivity within a short geographical range (10meters) and is not suited for larger ranges.
To conclude, it is highly recommended by our team for Party Plates to go ahead with these wireless technologies as they offer tremendous advantages in terms of cost savings, convenience and efficiency. Since they are relatively simple technologies, little training would be required. They are also relatively easier to embed into the current culture of your organization since the task roles of employees would not change substantially. The additional information that is produced through this network may actually enhance speed of decision making, resulting in higher profits in the long run.
