The CTO, otherwise known as the Chief technology officer, is usually the person within the business who has the most knowledge of the brand and market demands. It is this person’s job to determine which strategy a business will pursue and what standard the product will be. The viewpoint that this person works from is largely a technological one and also one who develops new technologies. In contrast, a CIO, or Chief Information Officer, fixes organizational problems through the use of current technologies.

The CIO is more focused on technology for the business operations of the company whereas a CTO’s role is to do with technology being used in the products that are sold to clients. Both of these positions should report to the CEO, or Chief Executive Officer. This is because the CEO has power at the executive level. Depending on the company involved, these two roles may also report to the COO, or Chief Operations Officer, or CFO, or Chief Financial Officer. An example of an organization that has the role of a CTO is Nirvanix.

This company recently appointed the former head of Google Worldwide Data Center, Paul Froutan, as their new CTO. The company stated that he will report to Scott Genereux, the President and CEO of Nirvanix.
