Mobiles Mobile phones which are also known as cellphones are widely known new technology of today’s world. They are called mobile phones because theyare fully mobile and can be used anywhere. They are wireless and handy in use. They technology of mobile phones is constantly improving with its new features; making it more fast, portable and sleek. The basic functioning of mobile phones is through two ways radio telecommunication linked with cellular network stations also known as cell sites. Mobile phones are electronic device which are different from cordless telephones or other phones, as cordless telephones have limited services. They target a limited range in which they work and catch the signals. But mobile phone has a technology to support the user to attend and make calls through any network throughout the world. The mobile phone doesn’t only support calls but also other features which are part of their serves. There are many build in services in cell phones for customers and there are many other services provide by cellular networks. Some of them are SMS, emails, GPRS, instant messaging, infrared, Bluetooth, gaming and MMS. Now mobile phones also feature entertainment accessories like MP3 player, video player, radio and camera. Those mobile phones which have modern advanced technology with different features are also known as smartphones Mobile History The first mobile phone was made by Dr. Martin Cooper from the company Motorola in 1973. That handset weighted almost 2 kg. The company Motorola released the first mobile phone commercially in 1983, the DynaTAC 8000x. In year 1990 almost 12.4 million people all around the world started using cell phones. And by 2009, the number of cell phone customers reached to 4.6 billion. Before the invention of mobile phones other wireless phones were in use of military or intelligence organizations; such as radio phones and codeless phones. These phone were wireless but had a limited access and usage. They didn’t have wide range and were not very handy. They were heavy in weigh and were quite costly as well. Mobile and technology Mobile phones are now becoming customized with new features. These features are making the mobile phones more useable. With each new technology mobile phone are becoming portable and useful. Now with the developing technology the mobile phone has become the necessity of person’s life. And they are also fulfilling the necessities of a person very well. Now we have our entire contact list in our hand to which we can contact anywhere. It also gives us entertainment in our handsets like mp3 players, video players, camera, pictures etc. Through cell phones we also stay connected with all our friends and family who are abroad and far away through calls, emails, GPRS etc. With the growing network of companies and market competition the technology is becoming cheaper and is also improving day by day in competition. When the iPhone was launched it decreased the value of previous cell phones as the touch phone was a new technology in all. This increased the completion and now many other companies are offering same technology. So with the increase in the technology there is also a constant decrease in market price in previous technologies. When apple announced the new 3rd version of iPhone, its price was half of the previous ones which were launched before since 2007. (New York Times) So with the fast development in technology there is also a constant decrease in the price which makes the technology more versatile and affordable for all. The companies also target the larger audience for their products and that’s why they always offer new unique feature which increase their market value. Gorbart speaking about the growing usage of smart devices states that he thinks the idea of technology is growing and now we are anticipating in seeing a computer in our pocket which has everything we need. The internet, the information of direction, the place where we are and movies reviews. So with the growing technology our demand from technology is also increasing. We want many other features in our mobile phones which them it more personalized. Mobile features Mobile phones offer many difference features from which many are in common. These features differentiate each cell phone from other products. Every cellular company has their own technology and preference to feature. In this new era many new technologies are introduced in cell phones which has rapidly become a part of today’s world. And in last 20 years mobile phones markets has rapidly grown. First there were rechargeable battery which doesn’t had long standby time but now the companies are providing a good standby time in batteries and now recently over the rechargeable batteries the new technology of solar battery is also introduces. And the other features phones offer are MMS, mp3 players, video players, camera , video recorder, radio, GPRS, gaming and messaging. The handset which has advance features and computing abilities with different software applications are known as smartphones. Nokia introduced the first smartphone in 1996 which had PDA functionality. Since then the concept of smartphone is much hyped. And those technologies which were featured in smartphones of five year ago are now a part of standard phones of today. And all the latest technologies of cellular companies are bringing new features to their handsets. For the target marketing the companies are introducing the series of phones which are capturing the specific audience. Like Blackberry targets the corporate customers and have featured the cell according to their needs. Nokia Nseries were the multimedia phones with the features of good camera, mp3 player and large memory as it was featured to be an entertainment cell. Sonyericsson introduced different series like Walkman series focusing on music features were as cybershot series focused on camera features. MOBILE AND TV Television is the most commonly and widely used medium for telecommunication. TV receives moving images with sound. Televisions are widely used for gathering information, news, entertainments and connection with worlds happening. The television has a large industry with different sides of fields. In 1925 the first working television was invented by the Scottish engineer John Logie Baird. So in the world of today’s technology where everything is becoming compact and handy the mobile TV is a relatively a new concept. All cellular companies are constantly introducing new technologies in their handset with new features. The concept of mobile TV is still not very common and available in cells phones. The concept of mobile television means that one can watch TV on his/her handset anywhere through wireless signals. It may be a hand device which supports television service or a mobile phone with a feature of mobile TV. The service of mobile TV is obtained through the connection of cellular network over the cellphones which support the feature of moving picture. This service allows the user to watch television on their cell phones. The mobile TV is not a completely new concept; the first mobile TV was a pocket sized television which was sold in 1977 by Clive Sinclair in various countries. They were named as MTV-1. MOBILE TV Since 2005 many 3G mobile phones had a feature of mobile TV. South Korea is the first county in the world to introduce mobile TV. Many other countries like UK, Germany, Italy and US launched the services of mobile TV but they were abandoned in them in short time span. The countries like South Korean and japan are the ahead of the world in the technology of mobile TV. They have introduced it with satellite DMB services. The service of mobile TV was launched in Hong Kong in 2006 by CSL operators on 3G cell phones. (Golden Dynamic Enterprises Ltd) South Korea allows the mobile TV through a large set up satellite DMA ( S-DMB) and terrestrial DMB (T-DMB). The T-DMB has gained much popularity in South Korea as it is free and is featured in most of the handset mobiles which are sold there. Today the service of Mobile TV is also available in India. The leading company of India BSNL has introduced this feature for their users. This feature is now limited to east and north eastern region of India. In year 2007 they introduced the mobile TV service named “isee”. It was launched not only for four BSNL zones but also for all other zones and services around India. (isee.co.in) MOBILE TV AND TODAYS WORLD In today’s world where everything is uncertain and mobilized the mobile TV is the technology which offers many reliable options. TV is not only the medium of entertainment but is also a great source of information. It provides us with latest news of world and what’s happening around. So the mobile TV apart from the perspective of entertainment is also very useful for staying in touch with world in a place where one doesn’t have the facility of TV. Mobile TV in the world of entertainment is also a fancy feature. It allows the user to enjoy his/her favorite program in his/her handset even when he/she doesn’t have the facility of cable or TV around. One can kill the boredom through the facility of mobile TV if the person is traveling, is in car/ train, or is in the place where TV is not available and when one is waiting or sitting idle. So there are many situations were one is bored and the entertainment on television can be a good company to spend time with. For guys the matches of soccer and cricket are always important and for women their favorite program of cooking shows. Through Mobile TV everyone can enjoy their favorite show anywhere and in any circumstances. It can keep you connected with the world which interests you most. In the opinion of many people the technology of mobile TV is said to give a new meaning to world of TV. Disadvantages and Drawbacks Though mobile TV is a portable technology with many advantages but still it has some hurdles and drawbacks which still need to be solved. And some are the issues which also cannot be neglected. Through mobile TV one can watch TV anywhere but TV’s signal are not available in every place. The technology in features of the devices is developing fast but in many areas it lacks focus like development of set up and infrastructure. Which the feature of Mobile TV one can watch TV everywhere but for it one needs a strong signals around. Then mobile TV is said to be portable and handy but with the competition if LCD screens and 3D effects how much a person would prefer to watch the TV on small screen of mobile TV. Technology of mobile TV has its ultimate advantages of its availability 24/7 on the handset but with it there is a limitation of signals. The other drawback is the slow support of date on cells which sometimes also hangs the cell and system for a while. Till now Mobile TV offers the limited numbers of channels. Not all the channels are not available and the choice of every viewer id different. So it also limits the usage of mobile TV. MARKET OF MOBILE TV People using cell for a medium of entertainment is a common thing in today’s life. We have mp3 players, video players, camera, GPRS etc which has increased the usage of mobile. Now mobile is not only used as the medium of communication and texting but also for the medium of entertainment. In Europe the study has made an estimate which stated that the market of mobile TV is rapidly growing and by year 2015 the market of Mobile TV could increase to 24 billion bringing more than 190 million users in Europe. (McKinsey research) And according to the another research in USA the demand of entertainment features in mobile phones is rapidly increasing and the revenue in the entertainment context has exceeded to 3.5 billion in year 2008. And they had made an estimate that by year 2012 the market of mobile TV will exceed to 15 billion. (MultiMedia Intelligence) So the market of Mobile TV is already increasing rapidly. It has larger market in the near future as with the passage of time the demand and need of entertainment is also increasing in the lives of people. They look for the convenient and easy way of entertainment which is easy to peruse. And mobile TV is such feature which allows every user to enjoy their favorite program in their palms. The focus of mobile TV in market is very vast. As the TV is not only the medium of entertainment but is also a way of staying in connect with world. In today’s world the lives has become very uncertain with the increasing rate of daily accidents etc. So one always want to stay in connect in world for which TV is a best medium. And to this the technology of mobile TV has given it a new way. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience of mobile TV is very large. If we see the audience of television we can say that everyone is somewhere using a TV for entertainment, news or for information. The kids are found of watching TV for the purpose of entertainment like cartoons etc. whereas adults watch TV for the purpose of information towards world and news. The youth enjoys watching movies, songs, serials and other entertainment programs. The guys in general like to watch sports about which they are always enthusiastic about and female likes to watch serials. So if we study and calculate the audience of television we can clearly see that everyone is connected to the world of TV. The technology of TV has become a part of our lives. The first thing we do to follow up the news is to see the TV. We seek television for entertainment and what not? So the target audience of mobile TV is also as wide as the audience of television. With the rapidly growing technology almost everyone in today’s world is a user of mobile phone. And most of the people use for both the purpose of entertainment and for the connection with world. The primary target audience for mobile TV is defiantly youth who always wants to see different and advance features in their handsets. Even in the world of today the entertainment has also become a light way of enjoyment. For entertainment one really doesn’t need to follow up the programs daily. There are films, songs, single plays and programs. These all entertainments follow a style for which one doesn’t need much effect or any follow ups. So with this light way of entertainment the technology of mobile TV has a larger market. It has already taken its place and is growing rapidly. Different cellular network companies are offering different packages and options for mobile TV serves are available for smartphones. So as the technology will become more fine and fast with time the target market of mobile TV will grow even more rapidly. MOBILE TV WITH TODAYS LIFE As I have discussed above the market of mobile TV is already growing. It has already taken its place in the market. And if we see the demand of entertainment in today’s world we can see the increase of expectation from the people. Since the technology and IT has taken a rise in their field the demand and expectations of people from technology has also increased. In many surveys people has shown a great interest in the inventions of today’s technology. And with every growth of technology people become use to of it which eventually becomes a part of their life and needs. So if we see the value and need of both mobiles and television separately we can see its market and the place they have now. So the combination of both as Mobile TV is a new technology for people which they are already acceptation worldwide. Challenges As the technology is relevantly new it still hasn’t made a strong stand in market. There are still many limitations and drawbacks which is hurdle in the growth of its market. Following are some of the challenges which the technology of mobile TV is facing today. 1. Not all the cellphones are supporting this feature 2. Costly subscription 3. Infrastructure of network doesn’t support this feature everywhere 4. Smartphone are still very expensive and doesn’t have universal market 5. Cellular networks offer limited channels. 6. Supporting a head feature there is a larger power consumption 7. Limited signals 8. To support a high quality signals there are heavy software’s for which a larger capacity of signals is needed. 9. Larger LCD display for mobile TV CONCLUSION The industry of mobile technology has captured the charm of audience through its portability and mobile excess in hands. The time has come when people expects and want to see new features in their gadgets. They are accepting the technology which is portable, mobile and sleek. The demand from technology is growing and so is the development of technology. The time of mobile TV has come. People want entertainment around them and so the mobile TV has all the qualities.
