?How Electronic Industries are Utilizing the Different Models Introduction The development of information systems has involvement of business or conceptual modeling of various things. The conceptual models provide graphical representation of relevant parameters of the information system. These parameters can be static as well as dynamic. The purpose is to make an enterprise model that serves various tasks of information systems quite efficiently. The modeling is not that ambiguous either and involves common human knowledge about information systems and general business modeling. The framework of conceptual model develops the information systems as abstract models around which an organization environment is created (Davies et al, 2006). The conceptual model emphasizes the applications of the system rather than its functioning and implementation. Conceptual model is broadly termed as abstract model of the information systems. It finds widespread uses in modeling of electronic systems which are modeled in the form of circuits and systems. Circuit analysis techniques aid in representation of the systems in the form of conceptual models. These models then aid in solving various complex problems in industries like huge power plants and circuit boards designing. Purposes of Conceptual Modeling The purposes of the conceptual modeling are described below. Helping analysts in terms of perceiving the domain of enterprise Aiding communication between users and developers of the system Providing valuable input for the process of design and development Recording the original requirements for referencing them in the future Importance of Conceptual Modeling The electronic systems have been part of many large industries and business environments. In past, the analysts employed vague methods for analyzing systems and always came up with wrong results and hence errors were found in implementations. They must analyze the users’ requirements in electronic systems with some formal approach that perceives the system in abstract manner. However, the analysts could understand the issue with the discovery of such method which could bring satisfactory results. They couldn’t manage to waste too much time in finding novel methods. The idea of conceptual models was developed that aids in timely detection of errors in analysis of systems and proceeds for correct implementation (Wand & Weber, 2002). Process of Conceptual Modeling The importance of conceptual models can be easily comprehended from its role in treating systems’ development. This process consists of analysis, design and implementation. Analysis section transforms the real world information system into the framework of conceptual model of the system. The design is related to conversion of conceptual model of the subject into information system. Implementation step is related to conversion of the information system into an implemented information system. Conceptual Modeling Language Conceptual modeling language (CML) is involved that defines various rules and regulations for representing components of the developed model. The components used in conceptual modeling of the system contain activities, relationships, entities, processes and objects. The CML shouldn’t be too restrictive to diminish the aspects found for the relevant systems. The modeling should take into consideration all the properties and dimensions of the system. It shouldn’t be too complex either making the situation rather complex (Lindsay et al, 2003). Conceptual Modeling Sources The conceptual modeling can be drawn from the models of wisdom and general knowledge. Three sources are normally mentioned for making conceptual models as follows Ontology is related to the environment. It perceives what is around the information system. Ontology is used to define the semantics of the language. Concept Theory is related to the human’s perception about the environment of the electronic systems. It is usually used for supporting in making conceptual models of the systems. Linguistics is related to the communication of the knowledge of the systems’ model. There could be various stages in developing a conceptual model of the system. The starting step is to represent the system as a real model perceived from the perspective of humans. Our understanding the system transforms the system in the form of scripts. These scripts can be input to the computational systems. Ontology helps in making real models of the systems under consideration. It is generally intended to deal with a variety of systems so the need of conceptual models is utmost necessary. We need a set of rules and scripts which together can be said as the grammar for conceptual modeling. The grammar is helpful in mapping various components of the real system into the conceptual model. It is used as an interface for translation of real perceived system into a conceptual model. The grammar is the tool for generating scripts. The combination of scripts is the actual conceptual model. Thus ontology as the basic element has given rise to a huge structure in terms of its applications and importance. It is utilized in variety of complex electronic systems for developing deep insight into the business processes and implementations. It can help in improving the performance of the system by carrying out proper analysis. It is not necessary that each ontological elements maps into a grammatical script. It is quite possible that many ontological instances are mapping to the same grammatical construct or absolutely no construct at all. The rules are valid moving towards the top hierarchy also i.e. scripts and conceptual model (Wand et al, 1995). Systems’ Analysis Models System analysis and design is quite a vast field and divided into various models as follows Representation models provide the relationship between ontological construct of the system with the electronic systems. State tracking model deals with the transformation of the states of the system to denote the changes of state in actual system The system model develops the complete understanding the system in the form of states and rules of the system. Research Avenues in Conceptual Modeling of Electronic Systems The scope of research is quite high in developing conceptual models of the electronic systems in real life cycles and processes. Despite its extensive importance, history suggests that its understanding wasn’t proper some years ago and many analysts wrongly implemented strategies leading to failures in the system (Wand & Weber, 1990). The researchers are focusing their attention towards analyzing the real world phenomenon in the light of object-oriented grammar and scripts. While grammar is quite useful in constructing scripts for real physical world phenomena, its use must be very well understood before applying it to the real systems. The use of grammar involves understanding of the information system in depth. The individual components and their functions must be clarified before using grammar in producing scripts. The creators use grammar rather ambiguously and no formalized approach has been developed yet for representing the real physical systems into conceptual model scripts. Researchers are focusing on making new methods of using grammars and developing deep-rooted understanding of the conceptual model construction and evaluation (Wand & Weber, 1995). In business environment, it is very important to convince the stakeholders in making investment in the project that is proposed as part of the system to be developed. The stake holders must evaluate the strategies and they need parameters for doing so. They must be satisfied with the parameters of the model of the system that are generated with the aid of scripts. Their area of interest must match with the scripts of the company to pursue them to invest. The grammar tools must be used efficiently in making valuable scripts. They must make some assumptions to build an overall picture and conceptual model of the system. Their information should be updated regarding values and beliefs about conceptual models. There is a tremendous scope for research in business processes regarding conceptual modeling. Stake holders must develop some domains of interest in electronic systems of the business. These domains are integral combinations of the scripts generated through grammar tools. The take holders must be able to breakdown the chain to look directly at the grammar tools to evaluate the electronic systems and methodologies. It is quite a hot topic of empirical research. A vital step in comprehending conceptual models is understating the relevant phenomena in information system. Different constructs of the system interact with each other in their own styles. The stake holders must be able to evaluate the interaction of all components in the domain. It is provided conveniently by Speech Act Theory. It communicates the meaning of phrase or system from one person to another. The issue of representing the relevant things in modeled system boils down to identifying the “things” and “properties of the things”. It is very difficult to judge whether a certain component of the system should be designated as a thing or a property related to the things. Some researchers take the point of view that they should have free hand in dealing with constructs and scripts of the conceptual model of the system. They should be able to treat the representations of the system according to their relevant things in the modeled domain. Conceptual models are constructed for helping in proper analysis of the system as information system or business environment. However, such an analysis is only useful when the real physical system in transformed into another meaningful version. The scripts made through the grammar tools must be perceived intelligently. The scripts should make the picture of the developed conceptual model clear to the analysts and stake holders. The combination of two or more grammars can be used to create more meaningful scripts. It depends on the scenario and the system that how many grammars are used for a single script. Conclusion In short, extensive research has already been carried out in the realm of business systems and conceptual models that are used to represent the real physical electronic systems of industries and related environments. There is a huge gap still in the research arena that could be used for future researchers in this field. They can explore the deep-rooted relationship between the ontology and the conceptual models. The conceptual models can also be used for knowledge-management systems. The analysis can be extended to multiple organizations at the same time.
