This project entails design and implementation of an upgrade of the current Information System. This is to aid the company in becoming very competitive and enable smooth expansion of its Information Technology Infrastructure. This project is aimed at providing the company with an advanced Information Technology Infrastructure that will leverage the data collected in Web analytics to promote company’s essential marketing plans. It entails coming up with a real time web analytic software tool. The tool will be used for capturing web logs, examine them and generate reports. It further focuses on provision of reports for measurements of web traffic parameters such as page views, visits unique visitors and other customizable features. The project is designed and built to re-engineer the current system used in the company. This project is considered to be very important in solving problems that exist in the current system which include lack of scalability to adapt to the changes and expansions that the company undergoes. 1.2 Background including current process Currently, the company’s has a well designed and operational information system. The system entails a Web Analytics module interacting with operating systems data to provide the company with necessary information such as its current market value. Essentially, the current system provides a significant amount of data. However, due to the speedy growth the company undergoes, and the inability of scaling up the current system it necessitates upgrading of the whole Information System. The main goal for its implementation is to support the expected growth that the company is anticipating. That is, to ensure that the Information Technology is expanded to meet current over growing web data that is very vital for optimal business Performance. The Information Technology role for this project is to promote business data capturing and processing at the company. It further aims to ensure that the company’s Information System guarantees business data confidentiality, integrity and availability. 1.3 Scope 1.3.1 Scope of project In order to ensure that the project provides the targeted or expected deliverables within the set out time frame, the project scope entails coverage of the following very essential areas. A well designed and integrated web analytic software application will be developed. Due to time constraints, only the following modules will be focused on. A dashboard module will be tasked on provision of a bird’s eye of all data captured, processed and those under processing. A visitor’s module will deliver variables of all those visitors of a web page. Thirdly, an action module will be used at adding a web page, deleting it or doing modification as specified in the module itself. A management module is a key functional feature that will be used at controlling user login, new system user registration and other essential features. A distributed relational database system will further be integrated to the software application to aid in smooth expansion of the company’s Information Technology Infrastructure. The sites targeted in this project include the main company website. Secondly, common global marketing sites will be selected and analyzed. Lastly but yet importantly, all the sites that have been authorized to advertise the company’s products will further be studied. Re-engineering process will first begin by transformation of the current database application to a high capacity, distributed database management system. Secondly, a special operational system data maintenance application will be developed to aid in translating, combining and maintaining data collected by Web analytic. Customization for the new information system will include be limited on only for top management. It will include an instruction for activation of auto achieving module. This module will be to speed up capturing information regarding daily web visits particularly when the websites are very busy. Secondly, a data sheets limit module can also be customized to limit the number of visits tracked per day. An Enable Geo Location is also customized to aid track the visitors’ country. This is through implementation of GeoIP database. The login interface is the first interface that authenticates and directs a user to the main interface. The main interface is divided into sub-interface. These are the dashboard sub interface to provide a summarized bird’s eye of all activities that have been captured. A visitor’s interface will provide general attributes of those who visit the websites. Actions interface will provide features on what to be performed or has been performed by a visitor on a page. Finally but certainly not the least, a management interface will be provided to manage users all the users who login or interact with the system. A security interface will be provided to aid in configuring security for clarifying the safety of analytics data. The system architecture will be made up of four layers. The client collation layer is for monitoring system interaction with web visitors. A server collation layer will provide data capturing. Thirdly, computation server layer will be for examination of data collected. A reporting server will further be developed to provide real time reports on data collected. The results of these reports will be stored in the database server. The only data volume that will be considered for conversion include online sales, customer visits to company web page, number of items a customer interacts with in the web page and number of users who visit or view company information advertised in other websites. Testing of the system will include only capturing of data from websites then processing it to produce real time reports. Project funding is limited to the company’s evaluation of the total cost for the project. Training will take a total of one month and it will include enlightening the company users on key steps on using the system such as adding websites to the system and examining the captured data. Education for this project will include tutorials on the applicability of the system in promoting business goals. 1.3.2 Constraints and assumptions Time constraint is an imperative issue for this project. Due to the short time allocated for this project, it remains vital that concentration is laid on the most essential features. Assumption considered in this project is that all data collected will include information about visitor’s country. 1.3.3 Risks The risk associated with this project is that the system has to integrate with codes of other sites rendered to end users. The security of the web analytic system is low since it can easily be manipulated by the host of the site. Additionally, since the web analytic collects all data from a served in a page, there are great risks of be affected by targeted viruses. 1.3.4 Scope Control Scope control for this project revolves around ensuring that only the requirements approved in the scope are delivered. This is to block any scope change issues that may arise since they may lead to loss of project control. 1.3.5 Relationship to Other Systems/Projects This project closely relates to a considerable number of systems that are widely used all around the globe. These include the Google web analytics system used by the Google learn the trends of their clients. It also closely relates the Piwik web analytics software that plays a significant role for major companies in promoting their business marketing strategies. 1.3. 7 Definition of terms Data It refers to the unprocessed information which is a raw material for computer processing. Information This is the data that has been processed to a meaningful way for the user to understand. Database It is a collection of related data that is designed, built and populated for a specific reason. Web analytics It is a software tool used to measure the web traffic through a certain web site. Web traffic This is the amount of data that is sent and received by web site visitors. Software It entails a set of computer data and instructions that are used to perform a certain operation in a computer.
