APPLYING THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE The seven habits of highly effective people can be used to enhance your personal and professional environment through. How I used these habits and guided myself to work efficiently and effectively. I used these habits to overcome my conflicts at workplace. I try to follow the principles not in the letter but in the spirit so that I can develop them into my personality.
Conflict rising is a routine phenomena in any of the organization. In order to avoid conflicts, there is a need of building some habits while working in an organization. These habits are a step by step approach to achieve your goal. The conflict can arise on either a personal or professional basis. One among many ways to resolve these conflicts is to develop and follow the seven habits of highly effective people. These habits not only help in one`s professional life but also daily life. These habits help not only to overcome any conflict but to avoid any conflict from rising.
In my professional work I am facing a challenge from my supplier. Supplier has heavy reliance on manual working which in turn delay to the delivery of order. He is the stakeholder of my firm and has long term business relation with him. The major issue with supplier is that he has delayed delivery of goods. This thing raises conflict between the organization and him. This attitude discourages the organization to place more orders. His attitude pretends that he is not interested to follow his professional network with us.
Proactive Approach
Adopting proactive approach is the best business process solution framework to optimize and standardize the existing supply chain management. To avoid any conflict between the organization and the supplier is that organization must emphasize on some habits that would help me to reduce misunderstanding. Organization must develop client support technology to reduce this misunderstanding. This would lead the organization to build better professional relationship with the stakeholder. Use of electronic tools, IT and supply chain database enhance the workflow by record keeping management. Meanwhile, this proactive approach augments the opportunity by targeting other companies.
Begin with the End in Mind
Then comes the stage of habit building is Begin with the End in Mind i.e. envision my goal. To make professional terms with my supplier and to improve supply chain management we have to maintain quality assurance. As our mission statement is “to maintain a global viewpoint, we assure the supply of highest quality products at reasonable price for customer satisfaction worldwide”. Our organization is trading base organization which first purchase quality products from supplier and supply it to the end customer.
Put First thing first
The habit of putting First thing first in the relationship with supplier is the prime priority of my organization. As earlier discussed in mission statement of my organization is to assure the supply of highest quality products, I would prefer maintain sound relationship with the supplier. It is a day-by-day even moment-by-moment process. In this case my purpose is to improve the professional strength with the supplier so that he would ship me the products on time. My responsibility is to oblige him while making payment in time. In case of one or more supplier I would prioritize that supplier as I have long term relation with that supplier.
Thinking Win-Win
Thinking Win-Win is life’s cooperative arena. Win-win habit is the way of thinking that forces us to act in ways that are in the best interests of both the parties involved and not that I win you lose or vice versa. This thinking is mutually beneficial for supplier and the organization. Wining does not mean that other loose it is the consideration of ideas and values of my supplier. As the economic downturn is going on, supplier refuses to give me discount is that I must consider what he is facing. I am confident enough that prioritizing his requirement will give us mutual benefits in the long term. Once it happened that I was not in a position to make payment lump sum, and the amount was due shortly. I decided to negotiate a payment on installment and he showed acted in kind, thus allowing both parties to enjoy a win-win situation.
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Other habit that would strengthen my professional relationship is that Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. First I must understand the commitment and values of supplier then to be understood by him. Mostly in personal life or even in professional, it happens that you seek to be understood first. But this behavior lacks the compatibility to the person`s you are affiliated with. So when any conflict arises between my organization and supplier I must first judge the situation then pass my remarks either agree or disagree with the requirement he imposed. Once it happened that supplier faced a lot of burden to fulfill demand and ship goods to the other customer. He was demanding the advanced payment of my supply. Those days I was confronting with slow business activity. And I was not able to make payment. But after judging the situation from his perspective I agreed to make advance payment. At that time I thought with his frame of reference and found the solution of the problem to avoid any business conflict.
Synergy
Synergy is a creative cooperation. It is mind openness and solution to the problem with new techniques. This does not happen by itself but it requires personal experience, integrity, evaluation, probing and interpreting. Synergy is the path way through which new ways can be discovered to ship goods on smooth basis. Synergy brings the easy mode of payment than it was in old times. Through synergy better trading terms can be decided. Synergy built trust in our professional relationship. Trading is one of the most important avenues where synergy can create economies of scale and help on creating a win-win situation for all the parties involved.
Sharpen the Saw
The next habit is Sharpen the Saw is to be fresh by keeping on practicing the other six habits. This habit makes you mentally, physically and spiritually active. May be this habit doesn’t have any direct effect on business terms but it can help to make personal relations strong and long living. But this habit makes other six habits strong. (Covey, 2004)
To conclude, these seven habits have helped me a lot in developing my personality and enabling me to work more effectively and efficiently. Although one cannot master all these elements, it is their constant implementation that a person can incorporate them in his personality forever.
