Download file to see previous pages The leadership styles are autocratic, where the leader makes the decision and communicates it to subordinates to be carried out; democratic, where he involves subordinates in the decision making; and free-rein where he leaves most of the decision making to subordinates. The leadership style that is appropriate depends on the leader, the subordinates, and the situation. The best leadership style is one that adapts to the circumstances at hand.
A team is defined as a small group of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, approach, and set of performance goals (Boone and Kurtz 1997). The most popular types of teams are work teams, which include high-performance or self-managed teams; and special- purpose, problem-solving teams. The critical success factors of a team are the following: 1) There should be an analysis of the job work to be done and to determine whether a team approach is a right approach, 2) The right type of team is matched to the job, and 3) Team members should be trained to perform their tasks effectively and efficiently. The characteristics of good teams consist of the following: a) optimum size, b) role definitions, consisting of task specialist role, with a duty to helping the team accomplish its goals; and socio-emotional role, charged with providing support for the group's emotional needs and social unity, and c) diversity of team membership, which has been shown to be effective in achieving better performance.
An effective leader is one who brings about results through the use of power and influence on his subordinates. Aside from the three qualities mentioned above, an effective leader is one who can achieve organizational goals through the appropriate use of power.
