Mission “The Mission of the organization is to create a distinguished social environment internally and externally and direct our efforts in the achievement of individual and organizational goals.” (School of Social Work. Social Work Practice Ethics We need to “……confront the demanding values and complex roles of social workers and examine potential conflicts with societal, organizational, and their own personal values. In addition, students look at ethical theory, licensing, and professional and legal codes and obligations for social work. This practice course provides concentration and depth in debate about ethical dilemmas presented by urban settings with concentrations of people with diverse needs and values, by contradictory systems of service delivery and by clashes of responsibilities and loyalties. It presents approaches for thinking about ethical dilemmas and models for decision making”: (Feit, Marvin. D. 2006). Knowledge and Skill objectives A. Knowledge Objectives 1. The biological person-in-environment perspective. 2. Social systems theory 3. Human behaviour theories including: psychodynamic, role, empowerment, social learning, exchange, humanistic, conflict, and theories of moral development. 4. The contribution of human behaviour theories to understanding human diversity and the consequences of oppression on human development and behavior. 5. Family systems theory and family developmental stages B. Skill Objectives 1. Use systems theory and other theoretical models to describe and assess the behavior and functioning of social systems. 2. Compare, contrast and evaluate theories related to human behaviour 3. Recognize the importance of research in generating, supporting and revising theories and concepts of human behavior. 4. Apply basic social work purposes and values in analysing human behavior in the social environment. Accordingly, you will be endowed with competency such as: 1) Thorough knowledge in the history, values, ethics, and theories related to social work 2) Be very sensitive related to issues regarding diversity, social and economic justice, social advocacy, social change, and populations-at-risk etc.. 3) Apply knowledge and skills, wherever possible related to human behaviour, in professional practice “….Learn theories that “explain and predict worker and client behaviors in interactional situations where services are provided explain what is involved in forming your relationships with your clients discuss the behaviors that are involved in the attempt to influence client behavior and how and when you should exhibit them make valid assumptions about explaining and predicting behaviour”… (Undergraduate Studies Handbook 1996). Team Work Team work is essential to any organization. Good team work enables the team to accomplish much more than the members could accomplish with the same amount of effort on their own. If the team spirits are high, organizations can achieve farfetched results in their pursuit of providing quality service to the society. We need to learn, practice and teach team work, and become a role model to others - for the benefit of the organization and the community. Empowerment and Encouragement Empowerment has become a catchphrase throughout the communities. Common goal of empowerment is to develop individuals and groups alike by nurturing qualities of self dependence without creating feelings of helplessness and isolation. By rewarding positive behaviors, people can be taught to take risks. By valuing individuals, people can be taught self-esteem. By providing opportunities, people can practice. It is important to note that encouragement is simply an educational tool. It is not so much an area of education as it is a method with which to educate. The education picture would include such areas as conflict management, critical thinking, negative reinforcement, empathy, self-reinforcing operations, role modeling, attending skills, increasingly challenging learning tasks and environments, enthusiasm for subject matter, self-directed learning, questioning, self actualization and the development of realistic expectations and world view. In truth, these areas are all closely related to encouragement and are essential to empowerment. Building positive relationships Our primary responsibility is in developing encouraging and positive relationships with others. First, and most important, we must get to know the individual and what the individual values in him or her, what the dreams of or hopes to become. We must learn the individual’s goals and aspirations, culture and background, personal situations regarding work and family. Important steps to establish positive relationships: First and foremost we must listen to others Treat others with warmth and acceptance Perceive others as human. Promote positive self esteem in others Maintain professionalism and commitment Demonstrate enthusiasm for responsible decision making Create a supportive, interesting, challenging learning environment Be compassionate, and extend timely support for others Conclusion There is nothing in this world that we cannot achieve. Everything depends on our actions, thoughts and behavior.
