The advancement of technology has more than and continues to render yesterday’s skills obsolete with every passing minute, and choosing to return to school for the necessary knowledge and skills was the only choice available for me not only to add value to my career as an accountant but to be able to meet the modern error challenges head-on. I went back to class to be able to unravel what I was not able to do, and so exploit my potential to the bream, for nothing is degrading as using borrowed skills again and again, yet it is within reach.

XXXXX [Name]: What is it that you are dealing with and why is it, different uncle?

Uncle Sam: Well, I am an accountant, and it would not make sense to deviate that much at the stage of my career. I am taking advanced accounting mathematics applications using modern computing technology. It is rigorous, serious, and more importantly, transformative to what I have. I simply love it.

XXXXX [Name]: How are adult learning activities you participate in different from those you were involved in as a child?

Uncle Sam: Adult Education is but a discipline in its own right, and its methodology is perfectly befitting for adult learners only. I am a professional with a unique set of skills, and so whatever information received is but an add-on to those in stock. It is different and unique because, unlike a child, I know for sure that my learning must be meaningful, and complementary to the numerous experiences I have had so far. To reiterate, my learning is well informed with a transitory need to perform certain, specific tasks in furtherance to the information already in stock. The skills passed on to us are tailored to solving problems, and real problems for that matter, and not necessarily on content per se. It is also important to note that unlike it was in childhood, I am intrinsically motivated to learn and that my participation in learning activities is voluntary. No one pushes me to go to school. I get it from my inner self, and so largely self-directed. I have a specific mission to achieve, with past experiences coming in handy at certain crucial times. Accordingly, there is always that capacity to think critically and/or transform ideas into workable solutions. A child copies what adults do, and so are my children as I was then. Their personalities hinge on mine and/or any other close associates like their teachers; they have limited life experiences; learn according to their ages, and more importantly, are motivated to learn by the rewards and punishment. I have to be hard on them at times to perform.

XXXXX [Name]: What are some of the adult learning activities have you participated in so far during your course?

Uncle Sam: There are several, to be sure. Among our daily engagements as adult learners, we share work experiences, individual as well as collaborative efforts, amassed in different sectors, discuss them at length at times, and/or collate them for fresh ideas aimed at tackling emerging issues of this age and error. With clear guidelines that dictate the very engagements, the drive to “know” far much outweighs the grade attached. As a student, therefore, I feel very much open in sharing to learn from others and also receive from them.

XXXXX [Name]: What is important to you as an adult learner?

Uncle Sam: Well, learning in old age is an investment that calls for huge sacrifices; both financial and psychological. It gives me the joy to know for sure that all that sacrifice is worth every minute investment — I now more than ever deserve my position or even higher at my work station, for I now have skills hitherto costly outsourced skills.

XXXXX [Name]: What barriers to learning do you encounter as an adult?

Uncle Sam: I have to admit that it is has been not all that rosy. You have to remember that I have a job and a family; my lovely wife, who has been very much supportive in my undertakings, and two lovely kids, to attend to. I have a delicate balancing that must be right; I mean that does not negate the primary sense of responsibilities. I consulted her, before everything, and we, as a family, will leave with the challenges, which surface almost daily.
