As will be discussed, the economic system of China at the beginning of the twentieth century was founded on feudalism. The feudal system’s self-sufficiency began to dwindle, resulting in the emergence of commerce or distribution system in 1900. China, therefore, began the century with a poor economic system, but later progressed remarkably. 1978 will be remembered by Chinese historians and economists as the period when the best economic reforms were made in China. For instance, market principles were introduced, that was conducted in two phases.

The first phase, in the late 70s and the beginning of the 80s, was characterized by a push for decollectivization of the agricultural system and the opening up of China to international investors. Nevertheless, the manufacturing sector of the economy remained largely state-owned. The second phase took place in the 80s, and entailed privatization, leading to major economic progress. The paper will kick off by discussing the collapse of the Feudal System and the Qing dynasty, and end with the economic progress that China was in, during the end of the twentieth century.

At the end of the Edo regime, the productivity of the People’s Republic of China, in a section of the clans started to rise speedily. They attempted to break away from the shogunate. Meanwhile, serfs began to flee from the remote villages to the urban centers, breaking away from the bondage to the land. The samurais, whose wages had been settled in rice, were impoverished. Therefore, the feudal system’s self-sufficiency began to dwindle, leading to the development of commerce or distribution system.

In 1900, Yushiki Fukuzawa, a newspaper writer commented that “a feudal regime was as spiteful as the murderers of one’s parents (19).” It can be argued that these individuals were ready for a modern society way before the shogunate rule ended in 1868 (Ikeo 19). Under the Qing dynasty, the economic system remained the same. Emperor Yongzheng tried as much as possible to save money.
