Changes in American Society in the 1920s - Essay Example

Different from the previous generation, the new young woman of the 1920s engaged in un-lady-like errands that received criticism from the older generation. Then the new woman smoked, drank, wore short skirts, and maintained short hair (Gourley, 10). It is positive to note that the new woman was allowed to vote in the 1920s as presented in the 19th amendment (Gourley, 10). This was an advantage since it gave them a chance to make state decisions through voting. It gave them a sense of belonging and importance in society. In addition, the new female gender was able to work in white-collar jobs. This not only gave them exposure but also allowed adequate participation in driving the economy.  At their homes, home appliances such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners eased their work so they could manage their homes and work at the same time. Finally, the development of birth control pills also enabled women to have fewer children that they could easily maintain, bring up and educate as well.

The 1920s saw the birth of Mass culture since the populace had increased wages and thus more money to spend. In addition to purchasing household appliances and clothing, they acquired radios. The first commercial radio station its inception was in1920 and by the end of the roaring20s, there were radios in more than 12 million households (Streissguth, 134). This progressed in movies and they could visit theatres to watch movies. Other than radios, the populace also purchased automobiles in the 1920s, and by the end of the period, cars shifted from luxuries to necessities. The automobile economy developed leading to the development of other businesses such as service stations and motels.

This development was significant in the sense that it enhanced communication and infrastructure in America. Important information could be passed through the radios since almost every household could access the same. In addition, it also promoted entertainment amongst the people. The entertainment industry grew since the media provided a forum for them.

During the 1920s, some freedoms were expanded whereas some were prohibited. The manufacture and sale of intoxicating beverages with more than 0.5% alcohol were banned hence termed illegal. This followed the fact that the demand for alcohol had increased and the prohibition policy was put in place to ensure that business individuals do not shift into manufacturing illegal liquor. The policy demanded the use of chosen formulas in manufacturing industrial alcohol as well as a permit for the same (Funderburg, 16).

Alcoholism was rampant in modern cities and by regulating its manufacture, transport, and usage; they reduced the negative social and economic effects that come as a result. However, the bootleggers continued to manufacture alcohol illegally since the prohibition unit had few personnel to carry out effective control (Funderburg, 16).
