This suggests that communists and communism manifested as elements that would stall the progress that America had acquired. It is essential to highlight that capitalism had influenced the material and social success of many individuals in the US thereby attracting wide popularity. The emergence of communism as a perceived restorer of the socio-economic imbalances that capitalism bore could not attract as much love as capitalism had attracted as a supposed progressive economic system. McCarthyism is one of the most notable ideologies of this 1950’s movement.

The term, in itself, is coined after a then Wisconsin’s US senator, Joseph McCarthy. The senator initiated a movement to cleanse the country of domestic communities, who he claimed were a threat to the government and the stability of the country. McCarthy influenced the ideology that such communists would subvert the US government thereby taking over the country. In turn, the society embarked on an exposure of the suspected American political left. Individuals in given organizations and those in the entertainment industry had their identities blacklisted thereby restricting them from general entitlements such as work opportunities and freedom of speech.

The paranoia restricted and barred liberal political organizations from criticizing or reforming the senator’s activities since this would have been deemed as unpatriotic to the US. It is crucial to highlight that most US citizens in the anti-communism sphere interpreted their stance as nationalistic. The idea of containment was a consequence of the Cold War. The US followed this policy after the Second World War in order to bar the spread of communism from the Soviet Union towards other countries.

The US deemed this policy as a means of engaging democracy in world’s countries. President Harry Truman curved this policy from George F. Kennan, a diplomat, in order to isolate the Soviet Union from world politics. Kennan
