This was due to the fact that the Mexican immigrants were perceived as a direct threat to the lives of Americans, since they were often implicated in matters concerning crime and gang violence. Despite the wrongfulness of the American stereotype of the local Hispanic population, the fact that they were present in the United States and that they had made a life for themselves in their adopted country against all odds that were set against them put local public opinion in opposition to them.
The fact that members of the American navy, many of whom had never set foot in Los Angeles, chose to attack members of the Hispanic population in the city, with wide public support is among some of the worst racist incidents to happen in the United States. It is possible that the feeling of losing control had become almost unbearable for the white population because of the growing confidence of Mexican Americans in their new environment. The Mexican Americans had come to the United States with barely anything to their names but by the 1940s, they were becoming an increasingly prosperous people, since they took advantage of almost every opportunity that came their way to make it in their adopted country. For quite a large number of them, their coming to America and starting their lives anew, away from the poverty prevalent in their home country was indeed the achievement of the American dream. The growing prosperity and presence of Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, as well as in other parts of the United States may have been behind the motivation of the American servicemen to attack these people in what became known as the zoot suit riots. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Zoot Suit Riots by Mauricio Mazon

...In the midst of World War II and international and domestic turbulences and crisis, the Zoot Suit riots broke out. For a full ten days, from June 3rd to June 13th, 1943, the rioters expressed their discontent at race relations in Los Angeles. The Zoot Suite riots never attained the levels of violence which the race riots in New York, Texas, Oregon and Philadelphia did around the same time, as none were killed, few were injured and economic damages were insignificant. Its importance, however, is not to be measured in terms of its intensity or violence, as Mazon explains, but in its symbolic meaning. In other words,...

The Zoot-Suit Riots

...The Zoot-Suit Riots   The Zoot-Suit riots are one of the strangest of riots I have ever come across, may it be in reality or in books and newspapers.  They are remarkable event in that they defy simple classification.  They were not, in any conventional sense of the word, "riots."  No one was killed, no one sustained massive injuries, property damage was slight, and no major or minor judicial decisions stemmed from the riots.  There was no pattern to arrests; convictions were few and highly discretionary.  There were no political manifestos or heroes originating from the...

Zoot Suit Riots

...Lecturer: ZOOT SUIT RIOTS Thesis and introduction Seventy-two years after the Zoot Suit Riots, the search for racial identity and social gratification still put the U.S at risk of leaving with the realities of the riot. The implication of this thesis is that events and reasons leading up to the riots have not been well handled enough to avoid future occurrences. As opined by Novas, riots such as the Zoot Suit Riots that have social connotations require thorough sociological methodologies in curbing their impact on society (91). By...
