It was hierarchical and relied on the existing ethnic dissensions in its alignment (Royal Institute of International Affairs, 43). It would indeed be true to say that the British policy to rule through exploiting dissent has left a drastic impact on the Middle East and the ethnic dissensions and the respective political and military power allocated to varied ethnicities is a source of contention in the present day Middle East.

To a large extent, the British colonial policies in South Asia during the period under consideration were determined by commercial and pecuniary interests (Barlas, 78). Still, the British rule in the region was considered to be liberal when compared to other colonial powers dominant in the region. In that context, British rule in South Asia was benign in terms of law, access to growth opportunities, political liberty, education, and the rule of law (Barlas, 78). In that sense, it is no wonder that the ex-British colonies like India and Sri Lanka today happen to be democratic and growth-oriented economies.

Hence, the policies pursued by Britain in every part it ruled were determined by its geo-political interests, thereby, resulting in diverse practical implications in the current times. Read More
