Four of the newspapers including New York Times quoted Gingrich in November 10 editions as calling the Clintons “different-culture McGoverniks.” It was here that media were clearly seen to be a prey to discrepancies in their reporting policies (The New York Times). “Changing the whole nation” with the help of media was the goal described by the novel of House. This gave a huge boost to the news and media and it progressed rather too rapidly. Another ability given by him to the republicans was that he taught them to redirect criticism with the help of shield issue, ‘GOPAC’, also known as political empowerment.
(The New York Times). Shield Issue is explained as if your enemy is coming to attack you and you are trying to protect yourself from unavoidable circumstances. (The New York Times) The lucid expression of this Gingrich philosophy of the media came in this GOPAC memo which was titled “Language: A Key Mechanism of Control”. It was given to the GOP candidates all around the country, the list of words for this memo for Democrats and for Republicans was authorized by Gingrich in the cover letter.
The words in the paper are a tested language from a recent series of center groups where we genuinely tested language and ideas. Next time Gingrich criticism focuses on media for being pessimistic, he should go back to this list (Corkery 17-21). ‘Language Matters’ is the main point emphasized in GOPAC tapes. In the video, ‘We Are Majority’, Language is listed as an important mechanism of control used by a massive party, along with Rules, Learning, Agenda, and Attitude. As the tapes indicate in these training sessions, the points were later on emailed to the candidates and hence there was a plaintive appeal.
We all believe that we can have a meaningful impact on campaign and way of communication if a little assistance is provided to it. A list of phrases and words was thus created for the purpose of training and teaching the GOPAC candidates so that they could use ‘Language’ both as a weapon and as a shield. This list was used in writing mails and literature, in manufacturing electronic media, in arranging and organizing speeches. These phrases and words given in the list turned out to be very influential.
(Corkery 28-29). The contrasting words are the ones often hard to search and they assist us in defining our enemies. Sometimes we are reluctant to use contrast. These words are very powerful and can help give a clear and concise comprehensible contrast. These words are applied to the enemies, proposals, record, and party. For instance for the contrast, decay, crisis, failure (fail), deeper, urgency, destroy, destructive, collapse(ing), liberal, lie, pathetic, they/them and etc were used as contrasting words.
(Corkery 28). There are positive optimistic governing words as well. This list assists in defining the vision and campaign of the public service. These words give extra support to the message to be delivered and give more penetrating power to the speech. Furthermore, these words assist in developing the optimistic side of contrast that is made with the enemy, giving the community a thing to vote for (Quirk). GOPAC was founded in 1979. It is a GOP (Republican) local and state training firm, even though, the idea of Political Action Committee or PAC is basically 527 firms.
It portrays itself as the leading training organization for the Republican candidates in the elected office on local levels as well as on
